This is a serious safety issue for Editors Park residents walking to/from the Giant grocery store and PG Plaza metro station. I'm shocked that a crosswalk was not already in place for the children walking to school.

Huge issue for the community and should be addressed. I am surprised there hasn't been any incidents so far. Definitely seen some near misses

City staff have been monitoring the request. There is currently a signalized crosswalk at the corner of Editor's Park Drive and East West Highway. As Sentinel Drive is currently a private street and the entrance to the Giant is a private driveway, and there is currently a signalized crosswalk within 200 feet, there are several safety and legal issues that would have to be studied before the City could consider installing a crosswalk where requested. Staff will continue to look into this issue.

I appreciate that there are additional considerations and that staff will continue to look into this issue. However, as Editors Park Dr is a public road and people speed after the crosswalk along East-West Hwy it is not clear to me how is is not possible to take action on the public road itself. Is there some sort of temporary measure that can be taken until a more permanent solution such as a crosswalk is in place? For example, a flashing sign or at the very least a 15 mile per hour school zone sign?

I am particularly disappointed that this study wasn’t done prior to the completion of the development. Editors Park is in the Transit District Overlay Zone. One of the purposes of the zone is “To provide for convenient and efficient pedestrian and vehicular access to Metro stations”. A crosswalk across the busy road that pedestrians must cross to get to the metro station is the simplest of requests. We just want to make crossing the road safer.

Just a point of clarification - It appears to be 280+ feet to the crosswalk at East-West highway (according to GPS take-off measurements). Also, eventually Sentinel will be turned over to the city (should be happening soon) - would it be better to flag again then when this last condition is no longer an issue?

No zebra stripe crossing Editor’s Park between the new community and the Giant and further to the Metro station. This is an oft used crossing for pedestrians when many cars are driving in and out of the school, not to mention cars coming to Giant.

I believe the community is asking for the city to paint zebra stripes. We don’t need lights, we don’t need an environmental study. The request went in 4 1/2 months ago. What approvals and level of effort are needed to paint a zebra stripe zone to help protect pedestrians and alert cars to pedestrians possibly crossing?

Completely Agree. Scott! This should be something very simple to remedy.

Is there any progress on this issue? It seems that this is a very simple community safety request.

There has now been a car accident today at this intersection. City of Hyattsville, are you listening?

City Staff have install a 4 way stop at this location in FY 23. We are soliciting a contractor to install curb ramps and complete the upgrading of this intersection in FY 24. Staff will continue to monitor this location and will make additional improvements in the future if needed.
