Ben, I'd just stop by the nearest fire house and tell them what your plan is. This way if there is an issue, they'll be able to help you address it. Such as, any masking, or parts of the hydrant you should exclude for the process.
Really, I don't see a problem with painting them. However, there maybe unforseen issues that the average citizen may not realize!

I talked to the new deputy chief and he is going to find out if it's ok. If not they will paint them. Keep you posted.
