This is not just a cycling issue. The crossing is in such poor shape that it's doing a number on cars as well. Grand Ave is a major thoroughfare through this part of New Haven. This crossing needs to be fixed, and it can be accomplished with some asphalt patching at least for now.

you have to come almost to a complete stop to avoid damage to your car. cars following you who don't know about this problem and aren't expecting you to stop often swerve around despite any kind of warning you try to give. even the city bus puts on its hazards and crawls over these tracks. the tracks on the other side of the river have been paved recently but nothing has happened here. the condition of the road here is unacceptable and only made worse because grand ave is such a major street.

I took another look and the Grand Ave RR crossing is much better than it was when I had last seen it. The jagged asphalt that used to stick up on either side of the rails was ground down and patched up (THANK YOU!).

It's still pretty abrupt due to the inner rails (I'm not sure what the technical term is), however, which stick up at least an inch higher than the regular rails. The next time Grand Ave gets resurfaced, I would very much like to see CT DOT install the rubber or concrete/metal treatment for this rail crossing such as what they use at the newer maintenance crossings at Union Station and elsewhere in Connecticut. For now drivers seem to be well aware of the need to slow down to a near stop here (see video).

Went past the site yesterday and the city was jack hammering it out and completely repaving both sides of the crossing and between the rails. I believe this issue can be closed now. Thanks!!!!
