Description
As I was crossing the crosswalk across Nassau, at University Pl., a person driving a minivan accelerated into a right turn into Nassau. There was not a crash, but the driver was texting and there could have been. I had the right of way as I was in the crosswalk and had the walk sign.
Drivers often proceed with a right turn here when they don’t have the right of way, bullying pedestrians to give way. This should be a signalized right, with the pedestrian crosswalk being on a separate cycle. This is one of Princeton’s most heavily used pedestrian crosswalks intersecting with a heavily used state road. Pedestrian fatalities in the United States are up 35% since 2009. This intersection should be proactively addressed to keep residents safe.
