Description
solid red turned blinking yellow in left turn lane on hayes rd. facing north. pulled up slightly thinking light was going to turn to green arrow only light changed back to red again leaving me in the middle of the intersection. Car in back of me had to back up to allow traffic to go through on 23 mile rd. Dangerous light does not work right.

Better get used to it...light's not broken but rather one of the new "intelligent" lights currently being installed throughout the county. I too have been the only car at an intersection only to sit there w/ it on red. The ones at 23 & Schoenherr and 22 & Hayes have caused major traffic backups since the day they were installed. I've watched one side w/ hardly any cars have green while other side backed up for almost a mile have red. Have seen the lights change so fast that my car is literally just entering the intersection when it changes from green to red. I'm really starting to think they don't work at all at night or when there's snow...perhaps something with the camera's and the lighting?
Shelby twp Police news did a story a month ago about the new lights, warning residents, as they've seen "an increase in accidents" at these intersections.
They're "ok" if at an intersection with not much traffic, but a major intersections they're really terrible idea and don't work.

Yet another accident at 23 Mile & Schoenherr this weekend...looked pretty bad too, one car overturned, hopefully everyone was ok. While the lights seem to have gotten a little better at moving traffic, there are still many many times when they're just "off".
Agree with poster below that left turn lane lights seems to be the major problem. There is an expectation that it will turn to green after flashing yellow & it doesn't. That leaves many cars in the middle of the intersection or as the poster below stated, pressures people to turn on flashing yellow when it's not safe.

According to 2010 accident statistics published in Shelby/Utica News on March 9th,:
23 mile & Schoenherr accidents INCREASED 30% from 2009 to 2010 (49 to 64)
21 Mile & Schoenherr, accidents INCREASED 50% from 2009 to 2010 (34 to 51)
Sgt. Cazabon of Shelby Police: "We're seeing an increase in the number of accidents...at all intersections where they have the new lights up".
Yet they keep claiming that these lights are "SAFER" and more "EFFICIENT"?????
There are MORE accidents...statistics don't lie! Traffic backups, particularly at the 23/Schoenherr and 22/Hayes intersections, have INCREASED since they were installed.
keep in mind when looking at the numbers...they are comparing 2009 to 2010. These lights were only installed in the fall of 2010. So you've got increases of 34%-50% in just a few months! I can only imagine what the numbers will be after these lights have been installed for a full year!
