Intersection of Route 20 on approach to Main Street from south. At this intersection the left lane is left turn only and has signage and pavement markings (although the pavement markings are poor). Confused drivers continue to drive north on 20 although they are in the left turn only lane. Traffic lights above the intersection add to the confusion as the left lane is a red, yellow and green only. This could be changed to LEFT ARROW red, yellow, green to make it less dangerous to the driving public. SAFETY should be the primary concern. When drivers do not make the left turn TWO lanes of traffic become one and possible collision.

There are two eastbound lanes in the section of Granger Boulevard between South Bolton Street and Main Street. There is a single approach to this section of roadway from Granger Boulevard heading east and South Bolton Street from the north and from the south. There are three signs warning of the lane configuration (left turn only and a straight movement & right turn) at the approaching signalized intersection at Granger Boulevard, Main Street and East Main Street as well as pavement markings. These signs are located at 540 feet, 340 feet and 160 feet before the intersection.
Traffic signal design requires a “duality” for traffic signal – two lights for each approach, so that if one light were to be out of service – a second light would be able to be utilized to move traffic through the intersection. If the green ball were changed to a left arrow and the other green ball were to be disabled, the only working green signal would be a green left arrow. Adding additional lights at this intersection would trigger multiple traffic signal upgrades to this intersection which are not funded at this time.
If the three advance warning signs and the lane markings are being ignored by eastbound drivers, then most likely a left turn green arrow for a driver intending to travel straight through the intersection will be equally ignored.
