Although Franconia has said it will not charge for their installation, local residents are protesting plans for adding sidewalks to their street. Plans currently call for street widening, curbing on both sides, and sidewalks on just one side of the street. Construction is slated to begin in 2012 and last for two years.

In a February 21 meeting, Franconia township officials annouced that contruction will begin in May 2012. The project will include storm water improvements and new 8-inch water mains. The decision whether to include sidewalks will be annouced in April.

Construction has begun on Erie Avenue, beginning with new water mains being installed throughout and new curbs and sidewalks starting at the Telford end of the street. Although the pavement is currently rougher due to being dug up, it is the beginning of conditions getting better in the long run.

Construction continues on Erie Avenue. Curbs and sidewalks are being installed on the Telford end of the street. Frequent road closures have significantly reduced the amount of traffic on the street. Traffic lanes are often narrowed, and the road surface remains extremely rough, due to repeated digging and patching.

Erie Avenue is closed between Fourth Street and Cowpath Road, except to local traffic. Excavation and grading in preparation for repaving has begun on the Telford Borough end of the street. The end near Cowpath Road remains unimproved, save repeated patching of the areas that were dug for water mains.

Erie Avenue is reopened as construction seems to have been halted for the winter. A base layer of asphalt has been laid over the section that was graded, but drivers must take care when maneuvering around manhole covers that rise above the surface of the new pavement. The Cowpath Road end of the street continues to be a very bumpy ride.

After a recent snowstorm, plows have scraped away much of the asphalt surrounding the raised manhole covers. Drivers need to use extra care when driving around them to avoid damaging their vehicles.

In a recent newsletter Franconia Township announced the Erie Avenue project will be completed in summer of 2013.

Construction has begun again, starting with excavation and installation of storm sewers in the uncompleted section nearing Cowpath Road. Drivers should expect intermittent closures.

With the installation of curbs and the moving of telephone poles, road closures on Erie Avenue are more frequent.

Curb and sidewalk installation is nearing completion. Regrading and paving are to follow.

Erie Avenue remains closed to all but local traffic. The Cowpath Road end of the street has been excavated, and a new stone road bed has been laid. Drivers must take care to avoid protruding manhole covers and drive slowly to keep from raising dust.

The Erie Avenue project appears to be finished. Drivers should be aware the new speed limit is 25 miles per hour.
