I've lived on this road for 6 years and the county has done nothing to resolve this issue! We have spent hundreds of our own dollars to try to keep the road conditions just drivable and between everyone who lives on this road thousands have been spent. Why isn't the county trying to help its citizens - we pay tax dollars for things like this don't we?
It wears and tears on our vehicles costing us dearly every year. The risk of getting stuck or sliding into a ditchevery time it rains puts our lives and our childrens lives in danger. I love living in Pender county and being a part of the Hampstead community but, this is just ridiculous.
I've personally spent to many hours of my time trying to maintain this road when it should be the responsiblity of the county to take care of it. What happens if a house catches fire and help can't get to us because the conditons are to bad? Or if someone were to get hurt? How would an ambulance get to us who live further down the road (when you're lucky to get home without calling a tow truck)?
We can't get any of the services that other places receive such as cable services, or trash pick up - simply because the companies refuse to travel down the road.
It's been something we've dealt with for far to long, other communities in the area are getting thier situations repaired - where is our help?
I have also spent time working on this road. I live on Cross Creek Dr. To go anywhere I must drive 2 miles on this road. When it rains and for days after it is a long ride taking about 10 to 15 mins. I have to drive this road twice a day to drop off and pick up my child at the bus stop. These are some pictures of what our road is like. We would be grateful for the states help. Thank You,
T. Campbell
379 Cross Creek Dr.
My family has lived down this road close to the end for 4 years! I have to go out 4 times a day just to pick kids up and drop them off for school.
The road is practically impassable after it rains and it is ridiculous that we are going through vehicles yearly..We have had 3 cars since moving here due to vehicle wear and tear. I love living down this road away from town; however we should not need a 4 wheel drive just to live here( eventhough we do own one) My husband has a heart condition and has needed the EMS a couple of times since living here, and it has taken way longer than needed due to the road ( NOT due to incompatence) What ARE we paying for? REALLY?!!??!! PLEASE HELP!!
My biggest concern is that emergency vehicles are unable to respond in a timely manner due to road conditions. We have personally replaced three hub assemblies on our car and we creep down the road!
We have lived here since march of 2000. We were told by the developer that the road was going to be paved and the school bus would come to our front door. Not happened thus far.
It is barely driveable on nice days and when it rains it is impossible.
Not to mention fire/ems trying to respond to us.
We need a solution, we need help.
What if someone needed fire or rescue and they can,t get down godfreycreek RD who will be held liable? county or state I think the county can aford to grade godfreycreek rd with a mortorgrader once every two weeks. It does not cost that much. P.S. lot of voters live on this road
Since Hampstead is not incorporated there is not a city to turn to. We pay taxes to the county and the State. Part of those taxes, or you could say all of them, are supposed to go towards these entities providing services for us. Since we are not getting the same level of service that other citizens of Pender County are getting, should we be paying the same amount of taxes? I've paid the same amount of taxes other citizens do for years. It is time for the county and the State to provide the services we have paid for.
Hampstead is not incorporated so there is not a city to appeal to. We pay taxes both to county and state so we deserve the same services that all other citizens get. If we are not getting the same services as others in this county, then we should not be paying the same taxes that they do.
You do not have to be incorporated to get this issue resolved- we know its not incorporated-there is a town hall to go to- ie complaint to highway dept- signed petition by all homeowners moves mountains-you are paying county taxes, if you join the city then you pay city taxes-(they will go up) but- your roads will then be paved! catch 22-maybe the signed petition and getting together with all the neighbors for a walk to town hall will get this complaint resolved-the squeaky wheel gets the grease! Highly unlikely the town goes to and sees this post so it is fruitless-good luck!
We need help and we need it now. Godfrey Creek Rd. is not safe for the residents who live here and our children. Our vehicles are being destroyed as we try to get our kids to the school bus. Thats if we can even make it due to breaking down or being stuck in the mud. The cars will slide in the mud and cause accidents and even county officials dread the thought of coming here. The mailman refuses to deliver mail to our homes. Please help!
After rain the road is dangerous to navigate and some days I am confined to my home. The local residents work hours on end grating the road but can only do so much when the road remains dirt and therefore susceptible to deep potholes and thick mud.
The dirt road was just worked on over the weekend by my husband and a tractor. Yes we can only do so much to make it better but it is better. This morning I was driving to the bus stop and was passed by someone driving much faster than me and I was driving at 20mph. On this road in my car that's a pretty good speed. If in the condition it's in now, and we are driving over potholes at over 20mph, yeah eventually your car is going to break. This is not a road meant to go fast on. How fast are people going to drive if it's fixed? We have kids out here and as a parent, i would feel safer knowing my child is riding her bike to her friends house on a road where people drive slower than 25mph. If we all just slow down a little, maybe our cars won't break so much. And our kids will be safer. I'll take that any day over having a nice smooth road to drive on.
The road is drivable until the next rain. With out even seeing the fast driver laura spoke about I bet it was a white toyota, Who has been asked numerous times to slow down, to no avail. But one bad apple cannot dictate for all homeowners who live here. The road still needs to be fixed permantely!! Child safety is number one always, but we shouldn't have to have a mud sling just to get them to the bus stop. Please fix the road......
Laura, based upon the number of votes I think you are alone in wanting the road to stay as it is! You want people to drive slower than 25mph but you yourself said the potholes do not stop people from passing you at 20mph. Maybe the solution is to teach your child how to properly navigate the road on their bicycle and to wear a helmet to ensure their safety. That is what the other 99 percent of the country do who live on normal paved roads.
Driving over potholes isn't the only thing that is ruining vehicles - mud caked in the engine, dirt in the filters - these are playing a large role in causing damage.
The mud is the problem. The rain creates a hazardous situation on the road and then we are forced to spend hours trying to improve it only to have it rain again. Hours of hard work, thousands of dollars in vehicle maintenance, inconveniencing friends and delivery men who drive to our residences - to the point of putting them in danger depending upon the road condition. The road as is stands needs to be fixed. Period.
To the concerned resident: I never said I didn't want the road fixed. If that was the case I would have told my husband not to spend all weekend and our money out there on the road trying to smooth it out a little to make it better for us to drive on. That was my money that fixed the road and we do thank the few that help with the cost of fuel and who say thank you. However, if the driving habits too that make the road horrible. We've stopped many people and asked them not to speed around the turns and create the horrible ruts in the road. My daughter knows how to ride her bike on the road just like all the other kids out here. But when someone is driving fast it's dangerous for them. period. I'm all for fixing the road. But what about the other causes of the road in the condition it's in other than the weather?? How do we fix those?? who's to stop someone from slinging rocks on gravel or burnouts on pavement??? I moved to this neighborhood because it was quiet and peaceful. if i want to watch cars go by at 45 mph i would have stayed in Wilmington.
The work done on the road is VERY much appreciated. I can also see the reasoning used in making speed bumps, to slow this person down (white pickup). However, there are enough holes and bumps on this road without creating more.
The speed bumps were the best idea for cross creek.. Slowed down the speed demons alot, greatly apprieciated. As far as Godfrey, I agree with the post of "why can't the county come and grade the road at least once a month" That'd be a start to seeing or tax money put to good use... nevermind paving then it'll cost everyone more in the long run, lets keep it simple and cost effective for everyone and be civil about it!!
I have looked into Haveing what is called BBC putdown on godfreycreek rd It Will cost apx 260.000 dollars that includes all equip labor and matreails. any body got a bank acc that fat. if u don,t than dont b so harsh to laura it cost a lot of money to run that tractor...and lets work together on our road safe and fixed. Daniel Cantrell
The reason I started this is to get the county and or state to fix or help maintain the road that is all. We all pay property taxes and it should go to fixing the road.
hot off the press acording to wect if the road is not state matained the state nor the county is requried to fix the road. need proof look at harley road in wilmington.the state or county will not touch it. so it will be up to us to fix godfreycreek rd .
When road is wet is is almost unpassable, with deep water and mud. I can't go and see my son, daugther in law or my grandson. This is very annoying and should be fixed.
The following is not meant to cause any further argument... that being said.
From what I can see everyone agrees the road needs to be fixed, however it may be. Even pavement needs maintenance. If everyone could work together and chip in, we could fix it ourselves. The county may take over and maintain the road, even this is only a pass with a motor grader a few times a year, If the road were paved our tax values go up. With the economy and job market I doubt anyone of us wants to pay more to live here.
The road suffers from many things, weather, drainage, the material it is made of, number of vehicles, the speed they drive, (say what you will but the faster you go thru a puddle, the farther the muddy water flies) the weight of said vehicles, and of course spinning tires. Everyone of these adds to the issue at hand, not just one by itself. Overall, with the exception of recently, I would have to say that the road is in better condition than when I moved out here. That is thanks to the people who spend their time with their equipment to improve what we have, weather it be a tractor and blade, or an I beam behind a truck. And to the ones that contribute for fuel, or more than anything just say thanks.
I enjoy the privacy and laid back life our road allows us. I don't understand the need to do more than 20 on this road normally any more than I understand why its necessary to do more than 45 in Hampstead.
Yes some people are a lost cause, the majority however can improve what we have. Not just the condition of the road by itself, but picking up trash, or trimming a few tree branches could help improve this neighborhood. Yes the road gets bad at times, It is after all only dirt. Impassible I believe is a stretch, Inconvenience defiantly, I have not yet missed work because I could not get down the road in my 17 year old car.
The following article was just posted on the news site today. It is about a paved road that is not state or county maintained.

After rain I can barely get on and off my road. The alignment in my vehicles are getting ruined and my children can't play on the road cause there is so many holes. Please fix this problem!
To add a side note on this issue I believe the money I spend in fixing my vehicles due to the wear and tear from going up and down this road on a daily basis is no where near the small amount that our taxes would go up to live here if the road was paved. I personally have not been able to get off this road before due to the amount of mud and water. And personally it would be nice not to have my vehicles covered in dirt and mud every single day. I would love nothing more than to see it paved!
After a week of rain this road is virtually impassable, if anyone has a fire you might just as well get some marshmellows sit back and watch it burn. If you need an ambulance just call Andrews for a hearse lately because the 2-5 mph max you can do on this raod is ridiculous!!! I can get to surf city from Hoover rd to 210 near Lowes"10 miles" faster than I can get off Godfrey Creek rd "2miles".... Lets see if we can get everyone to chip in $20.00 a month and get some stone to put down on the road and pay someone or have the people that have tractors that live on this road, "pay for their fuel and maintenance" help fix the road. Maybe a local meeting somewhere to discuss the situation and see if we can come up with a solution for fixing this mess. If anyone is interested in seting up a HOA for the road.. lets post here and meet up!!
there is no need to say any thing else about godfreycreek rd the county or state does not care. we are on our own with this. . But if we were to fix the road like it should be fixed i am scared the county would step in and take it so mabey it should stay like it is. I donot want to spend my money on something and then have it taken away. stop and think about what i am saying
Nothing has changed and the road remains the same. After this next storm coming through this community is in trouble again. Cars breaking down and someones going to get hurt. Its not safe to drive.
YAY for Tammy scrapping the road today. But............the speed bumps are killing the bottom of my car. PLEASE STOP MAKING THEM. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...
I like a nice smooth road to drive on also, but I will be leaving the SLOW THEM DOWN humps in the road. I apologize for making them so big at first but if people would just come talk to me about them to big I would have fixed them. We have made them smaller but they will stay. We have children that play and I'm done with people flying up and down our road. Vehicles slide on dirt when you are driving that fast. SO NO I WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE THEM UNTIL PEOPLE SLOW DOWN!!!! :) Have a Great Day.
Please respect the humps!!!! :) They are for the safety of OUR children!
Please don't be childish and spin tires, or shovel them down, there was a lot of effort put into them. Thank You
The speed humps are great. They are for the kids safety. As long as you go over them easy, they won't damage your car. They don't bother my car and I go over them multiple times a day.
Things are in the works to see if the state will bring godfrey creek up to "minimal standard road" That is good drainage and rocked. Thats a start to getting it paved ! bye bye dirt road!!!
The little bit of work we're able to do to the road ourselves is never enough. We have insufficient equipment and are trained to do this. The small bit of equipment we did have has just recently been stolen. It's going to cost us personally too much to replace it there's no way that we can. Help would be greatly appreciated now as we're struggling to keep up maintenance with our vehicles just to get our homes.
I can not believe someone would steal equipment that was being used for the benefit of all us residents!! Disgusted! The roads are still horrible and I'm dreading the fight to get down it for work in the morning. Bob-we would love to help you guys in any way please just let us know 411 cross creek dr. Tammy thanks so much for all you do we appreciate all of it including the speed bumps:) my husband is trying to find a tractor we can afford to help out. In the mean time if there's anything else we can do such as money for gas or repairs please don't hesitate. We won't to do our part as well.

2 options here:
Live with the way it is (terrible condition)
or
Join the city- they will pave it properly- taxes will go up
but road will be fixed
