  Thank you for sharing your concerns with us. Re: the bike lanes, that is the proposed change from the Salem Bike Master Plan. (the full plan can be found here: https://www.salem.com/sites/salemma/files/uploads/2018-11-02_salem_bike_plan_final.pdf) This plan covers the entire City, and we have been working to implement its recommendations street by street, but these types of changes can take time to be incorporated into a street design. Often times, it is when a street is going to be repaved that we will also look to implement the proposed new bike infrastructure. We will work with our DPS colleagues to determine what a likely timetable is for Broad Street to be repaved so we can determine if there are interim changes we should pursue in the meantime. We are also having the intersection of Broad Street and Dalton Parkway surveyed this spring so we can begin investigating design changes at the intersection to address some of these problems.

  Thank you for your input. The Traffic & Parking Department met this week with Councilor Morsillo to discuss the needs of the Broad Street neighborhood. We will be kicking off a neighborhood meeting to discuss the future of Broad Street with the Traffic & Parking Commission early 2022. Please be on the lookout for this meeting if you are interested in participating. We are also engaging with a transportation consultant to help with this effort.

  The Traffic & Parking Commission will be discussing the existing conditions on Broad Street this Wednesday 5/25 at 6pm via Zoom. Unlike the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Projects with temporary devices, this is a longer term infrastructure project. We hope to have residents in attendance to give input on what they would like to see on Broad Street and discuss potential interim measures. This information will guide the transportation consultants into the next phase where they will design alternatives for the cross-section of Broad Street.   The City of Salem Traffic & Parking Department has worked with a consultant to develop an interim roadway striping plan in an effort to reduce lane widths, reduce vehicle speeds, and enhance pedestrian visibility to drivers. This plan will be presented at the next Traffic & Parking Commission on Wednesday, February 8th at 6:30pm. The meeting will be held virtually, and the agenda (which also contains the Zoom meeting link) will be posted on the City’s website at https://www.salemma.gov/node/97483/agenda/2023. Please note that a longer-term vision for Broad Street will continue to be developed as this would require much more consideration for existing drainage structures, existing trees, lighting, pedestrian ramp and sidewalk construction, as well as potential bicycle accommodations, etc. This striping plan would serve as an interim measure while this long-term effort progresses.
