Sidewalks are a very difficult thing to have fixed. We have a block of Grove Street between 1st/2nd that is raised in several places. People have been injured. Healy's law department said that it was the owner's responsibility. When we pressed them to find out who is liable in the event of an injury, they admitted that the city would be liable. Therefore, any reasonable person would conclude that it is the city's responsibility to maintain the sidewalk. Keep on this one, Stephanie, it's going to be a long, slow road. That said, I have logged this with the Residents Response Center. Here is the case number: W023193-082813
Stephen, thanks. It is an interesting issue. There's a major one I reported last week on Grand. Beneath the sidewalk there's an aquifer, and during Sandy the concrete was pushed up nearly an foot in two places. It was so bad the city (Healy) had wooden ramps placed across the sidewalk. They are still there. The adjacent land is owned by OLC and leased by St Peter's Prep to use as their field. Almost one year later and it still has the boardwalk.
DPW repaired the sidewalk on Sussex! I spoke with them about the bigger problem on Grand, which has become worse, with the wood patched having separated and creating a gap in the makeshift ramp.
