These crossing signals operate in what is called a concurrent phase. This allows the pedestrian to cross that same time as traffic traveling in the same direction. This is the appropriate phasing for this particular area. They are more beneficial for areas such as a downtown, which have high pedestrian volumes as it allows for the most amount of motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic to move through the intersection.
In this type of phasing, pedestrians usually receive more frequent crossing opportunities and experience less delay than with exclusive signal phasing, which must service vehicle traffic and pedestrian volumes separately. When pedestrians are required to wait a long time for a pedestrian interval, many will simply choose to ignore the signal and cross during a gap in traffic, negating the potential safety benefits of the exclusive signal.

when traveling straight on Concord Street the walk signal turns green at the same time and i understand the phase so the flow stays constant but when I take the right turn and the phasing calls for me going straight to work properly...that is when it is unsafe...especially in the dark & raining weather. On many occassions people have stepped out if front of me due to them have the green walk and I having the green light (not going straight but turning right toward the Framingham train station). I just feel someone should take a look at that situation. I wanted to mention it so no one gets hurt, God forbid anyone gets hit at that corner.

As stated previously, this signal phasing is operating correctly. No changes are planned for this intersection.
