It looks like someone ran over it with a tank. Why is there an island in the middle of the road anyway? It wasn't there several years ago. If this is supposed to be a traffic-calming island, it doesn't work. It's just another obstacle around which drivers need to navigate.
The town of Hamden did the same thing on Ridge Road. The islands were recommended by Glastonbury-based firm WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff, which, in a study, monitored the portion of Ridge Road running from Davis Street to Hartford Turnpike and found the volume of cars and number of crashes in the stretch was too low to warrant the installation of stop signs. Instead, they recommended the installation of traffic-calming islands, claiming it would resolve the issue of drivers speeding.
We can expect to see more car crashes on Hamden's Ridge Road now that sections of that road with islands are too narrow to easily navigate.
How 'bout we don't make the same mistakes as our neighbors in Hamden? Let's get rid of these islands. Perhaps, installing traffic signs directly in the center of a street is NOT a very good idea.
