This is the Dodge Drive Gate (Barrier). In the middle of a registered and approved street.

How can police, ambulance, and fire trucks pass thru?

This issue has become soley an emotional issue that defies all logic. How can this issue to remove the gate be voted down by the city overlooking the strong support of their own safety services departments that want the barrier taken down? Someone please help me understand this!

There have been several occasions when leaving the development on the Rt 58 entrance/exit there have been traffic accidents blocking the way, and I have had to sit for 30 minutes or more waiting for the accident to be cleared so that we can safely exit. Vehicles unfamiliar with the entrance have been seen entering the gas station utilizing the exit to our development, causing several close "head-on" accidents. Also, as our kids become driving age, it would be much safer to have young drivers exiting the development down dodge drive which is 25mph, versus Rt 58, which is a 5 lane, 50mph plus route.

Once again, the fact IS that it IS NOT a safety issue, BUT a "convenience" issue. The businesses that are all along the same route/area on RTE 58, as well as houses get in/out just fine. I actually went to Subway during lunch today, that happens to be right next to the housing development entrance/exit and I was able to drive into Subway and leave without any traffic or waiting. Taking the gate down would create more traffic for Dodge Drive that our children and elederly DO NOT need...that IS a TRUE SAFETY issue/concern !! If you are wanting police, EMS, etc access, then there are systems that could provide them with a "gate opener." That really isn't the issue, however, what about the new development over on Lake/Main across from cemetary ?? Isn't there only 1 entrance/exit?...that's how it is SUPPOSED to be !!

FYI: Actually your information is incorrect. Let's Look at the historical facts: The extension of Dodge drive into NorthPointe was approved to happen way back in 1956 when Sliman's Middle Ridge Allotment (Plat 513222) was approved by city council to have 3 stub ends (Lancer, Royal, and the extension of Dodge). Culdisac's were not installed because they wanted future growth (hence the stub ends). In 1957 the 1st stub end was extended to create Lancer Drive. In 1978 the 2nd stub end was extended to create Royal Drive (and also Welk Lane). Welk Lane (never completed) parallel's the Dodge Drive stub end to extend into the next development. And then in 2005 City Council approved the final stub end to extend into NorthPointe. Dodge drive now is approved and a public road into NorthPointe. This is what was supposed to happen way back in 1956, it just took many years to happen. NorthPointe construction started and then the change in History happened. Dodge drive in NorthPointe got extended even further all the way out to Rt-58. Now what factual data supports the increase in traffic on Dodge Drive should the gate come down? Not assumptions or feelings.... Facts (Traffic Study). There are traffic studies to the contrary. Fact: The gate has actually caused multiple safety issues already that has nothing to do with traffic on Dodge. A child was hurt crossing from NorthPointe to the corner of Royal/Dodge where her bus stop is. Fact: A home caught on fire in NorthPointe and when the fire trucks approached the gate coming down Dodge (it was locked at that time) they had to turn around and loop all the way around while the homeowner and his family standing outside their home watch the fire trucks re-route. How would you feel if either of these happen to you or a family member? This is a ACTUAL SAFETY TRAVESTY. Fact: Dodge drive exists and was approved by City Council, Lorain County, and is a Public Road that is blocked from Public use.

Trying to look at this situation objectively I understand the fact that the people in your allotment want the convenience of being able to exit both ways out of their allotment. We all would like things that make life easier and less stressful.

As far as a safety issue, I agree with FYI who says there are systems that could provide police and fire with a "gate opener." I live in a gated community and there are many like it in my city. There is no problem whatsoever when police or fire need to gain access. I don’t see why this couldn’t be implemented in your city as well.

I think all people involved need to look at this issue in perspective. We are living in a country where people are unemployed and worse and we have boys dying in Afghanistan for our safety. Don’t become like our current political parties who can’t seem to work together to make progress. This can easily be worked out successfully in your community just like it is done in mine.

Objectively some residents on Lancer/Royal/Dodge are already going thru the gate on Cars, motorcycles, bikes, ATV's, and lawn equipment to access Rt-58 and the gas station on the corner of our entrance and then return (nice convenience for them). So it's OK for those residents to go thru and use it as a public street but not others... Is that not discriminatory? See picture, happens all the time. We agree the gate had it's purpose when heavy construction equipment was rolling down dodge drive and was dangerous. But that's over with. So now it stays up to keep public traffic from using Dodge Drive. So how do you compromise the safety of one group over another? Who's safety is more important? Both should be important.. The NorthPointe side has suffered injuries because of the gate. But I guess that does not matter. It not a convenience, it is a secondary safety egress/ingress path that we as residents of the community cannot use. You say work together but none of the current residents of NorthPointe had any say about not blocking the road and now that we are expressing our concerns (similar to the group that got the gate up due to the big trucks) our voices are ignored. I read the posts and noticed that the people who want the gate removed use their names while the people that don't want it removed keep their names confidential. That is your right but it seems a little peculiar considering the issue here.
Lastly, both developments support our city and doing the right thing for the majority of people I believe. There are plenty of people on the "older" side that want the gate down also. The issues here are safety, privacy, and progress/change. Let's have a meeting between the two groups and work this out. If not, it could become a costly contested issue that no one wins.

And Carl, how did the gate cause injury to someone? I believe someone from your development took the gate down illegall, maybe it bit them.

There are remote lift gates that could be installed to allow safety vehicles through. They can use either a keypad or garage door opener type remote. I would be more than happy to research this, as this would keep traffic to minimum through the "older" side, and allow safety access to the "newer" side. If of course this is truly about safety. If you want to argue that we purchased a home on the newer side with the gate there and that we have to deal with it, that is a fair argument. You also have to use the same logic for people living on Dodge Dr. If you were diligent when you were purchasing your home on Dodge Dr, you would know that Dodge Dr would one day be a through street as planned and plotted by the city 55 years ago.

I would like to remind everyone that the only reason the gate is there was because of one woman concerned about heavy construction vehicles. With that being said, the heavy construction vehicles are no longer an issue.

I will extend this offer to personally meet with any or all residents to discussion the issue further.

FYI & Dave G. Just to bring you up to speed if you have not looked at the gate closely lately. The gate is no longer a fixed type gate....It used to be locked shut. The City changed it last year and removed the lock. Why?...Because of the two issues we have stated. Some of the residents young children in Northpointe have to cross over the gate everyday and walk to the corner of Dodge/Royal to get on their school Bus. That is their designated bus stop. When snow piled up one child had to climb over it and slipped and fell. Also a home caught on fire in Northpointe and the fire trucks were blocked at the gate (again it was locked) so the city changed the gate from a locked gate to a freely swinging gate (liability??). They also cut a couple of feet of the end of the gate so motorcycles and other small vehicles pass thru the gate without having to touch it. A strong wind can now push it open it's that easy to move. So what does it really do now other than hold up the sign on it?

We are not a gated community and never were platted as one so the one entrance idea has no basis. Actually city council has stated that long distance subdivisions are supposed to have two egress points. That is what we are asking for, an alternate secondary point to exit our community if our primary point is blocked. We have had residents blocked in our community due to automobile wrecks at the Rt-58 entrance and they could not exit. The same could happen at the corner of Dodge/Middle Ridge causing all residents there to be blocked in. Wouldn't it be safer to have an alternate egress point for the Dodge/Royal/Lancer residents also?
If the city install's an electronic gate who will be liable when it fails to open (storm, power failure, ect) when fire trucks or ambulances are responding to a call?? That already happened which caused the city to change the gate to free swinging.

The gate being stolen happened before I took ownership of my home so was not aware.

The busing issue needs to be brought up before the Amherst School board and Superintendent! It's ridiculous enough that the children have to walk to the ends of Dodge & Lancer. Northpointe should have a bus pick/drop off at Northpointe where they live! That is a school issue, NOT a city issue!

Since it appears you haven't read the sign on the gate that clearly states for Emergency vehicles...do we need to take a pic of the big, yellow sign on Dodge that has been there forever that states "No Outlet!"...Wonder what that means??? Maybe no access for electrical necessities??...It's means there is ONLY "1" way in/out of Dodge Drive :)

Also, noticed on 4-lane, much BUSIER West River Rd North, they have the Cherry Ridge Condos with only access to West River & the multi-development Foxhill Lane that has Colonial Meadows Townhouses & Floridian Apts & Village Green Condos...to name a few...with...hum... access to only that horrifically 4-lane West River Rd, North...Maybe they need to get access to 113 !!

Wondering if "nobody" (esp TRAINED PROFESSIONAL EMERGENCY CREWS)"don't know" where Northpt is...how did u find it to buy your home there ?? EMS, etc. DO KNOW where you are, so please don't insult their intelligence.

We are finished debating over this. If you want to be Northpt, then the gate stays up. If you want to take your Northpt sign down and open ALL you facilities to the community then maybe you might think you are goingto make expections.

Fact is...we unfortunately do not live in a perfect world & it is wrong to thing that those who fuss the most/loudest always get what they want. When considering what you want to fuss over, you might want to consider: "Is a worth causing bitterness and unfriendliness where otherwise could have been mutual kindness respect for what was already the way it was and meant to be ?" I've seen a lot of people cry & fuss for something & then later REGRET what they ended up getting. The saying goes, "Now that you got what you wanted...do you want what you got?" Most of the time, with no way to turn the clock back...the answer is usually, "God forgive me, NO !! I wish I would have just been CONTENT with what I HAD !!"

Also, I don't understand why a child from Northpt has to walk over to Dodge to get on the bus? The parents clearly are paying Amherst taxes & a bus should be going over there to pick up the children that live over there! I do not recall the last time that I heard of a bicycle speeding through an intersection, running a stop sign, and killing anybody. Riding a lawn mower to the gas station to fill it with gas is an issue to take up with the local law enforcement agency.
It appears that the people that want the gate down want to discuss this on a forum to bad-mouth others, and spread lies around instead of coming up with a reasonable solution. You should use the energy you waste on complaining on a forum that will not result in anything on getting information about getting a lift gate, traffic signal or other traffic control device installed. It really sounds like a spoiled kid who is rebelling because his/her mommy and daddy wouldn't buy them the latest and greatest toy for Christmas.

The gate was there when YOU bought your house. Rt 58 was also there when YOU bought your house. YOU chose to live there. I guess civility just went out the door as posts have become a little hostile. Let's all take a deep breath. Dave, FYI, John, et.al. we are all agreeing on many points and are having difficulty on others. We are still open to discussing these issue with all residents. We have already inquired on street lights, traffic control devices and other options but have met resistance in pursuing those ideas (Costs $$). The schools have been difficult also, we know, they moved our bus stop out into the front section and the kids have to stand in a field with no sidewalks unless their parents park their cars and wait for the bus to pick up the kids (we're talking almost on Rt-58, that's a very long way away from the back of Compass Ct.). We still have one school on the Dodge Dr. side pickup. Neither are really good solutions and are causing concerns. We are running out of options and my original post here was to spark an online debate as to what's next. We've tried many other things (including removal). We have called the police multiple times but the pattern is we are ignored and nothing has been done. Nice way to welcome new residents to Amherst. I personally have stopped an officer when construction equipment was blocking the gate (earlier picture I posted) and..... nothing happened. So can we agree both sides have safety issues and how this all evolved? Even if we agree to keep the gate it's not being policed or controlled which is part of our concerns. We have the same safety concerns as the Dodge Drive residents but options are few. Leaving the gate solves some issues but still leaves others. There in lies the debate.

Here is a web-site that contains information on a powered traffic lift gate: http://www.barrier-gate.com One of these could be installed, with a card style, "garage door opener" or keypad entry system. I am not sure of the cost, but I know they work as my employer has one to keep traffic from cutting through the parking lot. This would allow people with the passkey, "garage door opener" device or card to enter. This would include residents and public safety and utility workers. We are only concerned with the through traffic. Most of the residents that live on the newer side will not be affected by the increased traffic due to the gate coming down on the old side. Myself and the others that live on the old side will be. I am concerned for the safety of my neighbors as much as you are, however, as I had stated in earlier posts, I didn't chose to live in the new side. School bus issues need to brought to the school board's attention. Police protection, such as dereliction of duty, are issues that need to brought to the Chief's attention. I see all of the issues you bring up. I also understand the intersection on Rt 58 is not a good one. But as I had stated before, you bought the house with the intersection being in the state it is in. Why do you want to make others pay the price because you made that decision. I am not trying to be harsh, crass or a pain in the butt, all I am saying is it was your decision to live there.

I keep trying to give you the facts, but you are choosing to ignore them. Here they are again. You bought a home on a street that has taken 55 years to fully develope (which is mapped as a through street) I am sorry that everyone has become comfortable with how things were, but times have finally caught up and now dodge Dr is completed as it was meant to be.

You can choose to keep ignoring these facts, but the facts won't change. The woods are gone and the street has been paved. The gate is a temporary barrier which purpose was to stop heavy construction vehicles.

Please explain the facts and only the facts for keeping the gate up.

HEllO everyone! My name is Theresa Brown. I live in Northpointe Estates and I love my neighborhood!! I couldn't be happier here. I read of few of the comments posted, but too many to read every single one and rebuttal. My stand point on this issue is that I WANT THE GATE TO STAY (or some type of gate) to reduce as much traffic as possible now and in the future. This is a new development, more people will be building here and that needs to be considered. Based on safety, the local police and fire should have and had a tour of this development and when they were needed for that fire, they got lost in all the cudalsac. Removing the gate would not have fixed this. The injury to the child, that is a school issue. They need to redirect their bus routes to accomodate the new development, no child should have to walk that far to their bus stop. Removing the gate will not fix that. Vandalism, you will have that anywhere. Removing the gate will not fix that. Having the gate up will cause more traffic and more danger, especially, since we do not have any sidewalks on the townhouse side(except between the homes). It is a danger not only to those in the development, but to those who vist our developement. This issue no matter which way it goes, will have it's issues in regards to safety, bus stops, privacy, traffic, and selling of homes. We have to see what is the best for both communities. I say we vote and let that do the talking.

My name is Ken Ferris and I would like to offer some thoughts on the issue of the Gate blocking Dodge Drive.

First, I was one of the original signers of the petition to block Dodge Drive. I signed because I did not want heavy construction equipment traveling on Dodge Drive tearing up the road that was not constructed to bear those loads. That time has passed and so has the need for the gate based on those grounds. Second, a significant number (if not half) of those who signed the original petition have either moved or have passed away.

I have heard the cry that traffic will increase substantially if the gate is removed. I find this hard to comprehend. For the people that live to the West of Dodge Drive why on earth would they get off Middle Ridge Road where they can travel at 35 MPH with only one stop and minor curves to RT 58 with a stop light to aid in turning onto Rt. 58, to enter a residential neighborhood where the speed limit is 25 MPH, currently has 3 stop signs, 3 turns and one 90 degree curve, not to mention a very dangerous intersection trying to get onto Rt. 58? Really!!! I live on Royal Drive and there is no way I would turn right onto Dodge Dr. to go through all that if I were traveling North or East out of the area. I would turn right if and only if, I were going South on Rt. 58. Since almost the all schools, churches, shopping, etc. is to the North I seriously doubt people would go through the maze to go North or East. They may try it once just to see what it is like but probably would not do it again.

Currently, the time to go from the intersections of Dodge Drive to Rt. 58 via Middle Ridge Rd. is 1 ¼ to 1 ½ minutes. Making the same trip by going down Dodge Drive to Longitude Ln. to Bearing Court to West Point Dr. to Rt. 58 is over 2 ¾ minutes depending on the traffic on Rt. 58 and includes a harrowing left turn onto Rt. 58.

To make the traveling between Rt. 58 and Middle Ridge Rd. via Dodge Dr. even less palatable, additional stop signs could be erected at the intersections of Lancer, Dodge, North Pointe Blvd., Longitude Drive and West Point Drive making them three way stops. This would make it even longer to travel that route and would help ensure that people only go 25 MPH since by the time they get up to the speed limit they will need to break for the next stop sign.

I recommend that the gate be removed and the stop signs be held in reserve to see what really happens and are erected as needed to control traffic.

Thank-You for your support Ken! It's amazing how this Gate Scenario looks once someone applies logic to the situation. I'd love to know how many other residences in your development have the same opinion as you. I would bet a substantial amount. I would guess that there is only a handful that are still looking at this emotionally. Thanks again Ken.

I am a resident in the Northpointe neighborhood. When we bought our house, we were told that the gate was put up to keep construction vehicles out and that it would be removed at the completion of construction. I have a couple of concerns. First, many people and businesses use GPS or on-line maps and are given wrong directions to our development based on the fact that Dodge Drive is platted as a through street. Second, there are many accidents in front of Sunoco. I could not get to my home as a result of backed up traffic. Third, the section of 58 we currently pull out onto is not even in the city of Amherst. How can residents in Amherst have influence to change an intersection that is not part of the city where they pay taxes? Fourth, it is not safe to pull out onto 58 and turn north when the road is icy. Often times the snow in between the lanes is built up. It scares me when I pull out and my tires are not getting good traction due to ice. Once again, I would have to request changes to a city where I do not pay taxes. Fifth, I am concerned about police access. If someone on foot, bike, motorcycle, or four-wheeler were to run from police, it would be an easy escape if the police had to wait to open the gate... that goes either way. And last, but not least, it breaks my heart that people are so upset about this. It is a gate. If the main concern is about the flow of traffic, why not do a traffic survey and see what the results of opening it really are. It might be higher at first because people are curious, but after discovering what Ken Ferris wrote about below, I believe traffic would be minimum and mostly local neighbors.

This gate should come down for the safety of those living in NorthPointe, and also we all live in the city of Amherst and preferential treament should not be given to anyone. Our councilmen should be impartial and not back issues that benefit their family members. They should consider the community as a whole.

I live over on Brennan Dr. across from trinity church. My best friend's family lives in Northpointe and that gate has been a huge issue ever since they moved there. It needs to be taken down. It is so stupid. I thought Amherst cared about issues like this. Obviously not. I hate saying that I live here sometimes cuz no one EVER LISTENS TO OUR PROBLEMS. All we ask is for you to take down the dumb gate.

One of the great thing about America is the personal freedoms we have. Government by the people is the law of the land. Dodge Drive is a dedicated PUBLIC street. If I choose to go down down Dodge Drive to access Middle Ridge Road or use Dodge Drive to access State Route 58, then by golly, I should be allowed to make that simple choice.

I am not a rebel but respect our laws. All the other arguements have some merit. But, it boils down to my opening comment. Do you want more government or less. I vote with my ballot and my pocket book. I vote for less government and more freedom of choice. Mr. Gorbachev tear down that gate!

Here is something to ponder. I grew up in town ((I'm 48) and remember when there was a barricade and a small section of trees from the corner of Sunrise to Rainbow.

Should that 'gate' been left there?

For those who may not know the location, it's became the entrance of Nord School. I'm willing to bet the people oppose to opening the gate have traversed down Lincoln Street over the years to church, schools and shopping.

When Rt. 2 was constructed, the bridge was added to connect the two parts of town, but for years there were no approach from either side.

The new chief of police has gone on record that it should be removed. No other residents on dead end streets that were opened up to new developments has had a benefit of having their road blocked to keep traffic off it in Amherst. Their is no evidence of increased traffic accidents and additional traffic has been minimal. So if our new chief would like to see it down why is city council ignoring the wisdom and experience of the cities professionals and don't want to remove the gate??? I'm having a difficult time understanding this.

Another thing to ponder. When Dodge Drive is torn up this summer to fix the road and sewers will city council open the gate to let traffic from Dodge/Lancer/Royal go into Northpointe because their road is under construction??

This gate is dead locked in city council and vacating has been removed as a possible solution so what do we do now?? Just ignore it seems to be what council wants to do....

This issue has moved from committee to council to be taken down. The safety services people have asked for it to be removed. This issue might soon be resolved.

City Council has voted 4 to 3 to allow the city safety director to remove the gate. The mayor has 30 days to sign the resolution and then the crew can be assigned to remove the gate. This issue is in progress of being closed.

Rumor is circulating that the Mayor is not going to sign the resolution.

Have not heard that yet. All of my correspondance with the Mayor has him signing it by the 19th of January and having it removed.....

I would like to know who the "guest" is that made the comment abour Mayor Taylor, they made the comment but failed to place their name on that comment!

I think 'guest' is blowing smoke. I was present at the council meeting when the gate was put into place. It was never meant to be a permenant fixture. I think the belief that cars using it as a shortcut has a lot of BS in it

Gate or no gate, Northpointe will always be Oster's mistake on Route 58.

I respectfully submit to Mulberry that is the mentality that we have been dealing with for 8 years. Quite simply Dodge is a dedicated public road and shouldn't have been gated in the first place. Anyway, I am sorry Mulberry thinks North Pointe is a mistake. Maybe we should ask the Amherst officials if they would like to send the Northpointe property tax revenue to Lorain. They could sure use our help.

Mulberry, please understand Northpointe is good for Amherst and you. We pay for the Amherst Public Schools, Amherst services, and Amherst government officials. I love Northpointe and my neighbors. You are welcome to walk over, ride your bike, or walk your dog into our neighborhood any day like so many already do.

The gate has been removed after city council voted to have it removed. There have been signs posted for speed control and watch for children. Even though the gate has been removed the residents will be diligent in reporting speeders using this as a race track and will have them ticketed. Both side are now one and will work as a community to keep the streets safe.
