This area is completely out of control and become a blight to the surrounding businesses and residents. 66th St is a thorough fair of trash and campers moving between the offramp and McDonalds on San Pablo. We've had several close encounters where mentally ill people are standing in the middle of the road or have left a cart in the street in the evenings and narrowly avoided an accident.

The previous encampment on the other side of the road was shutdown only after a woman died there and her body was left in a tent for several days. But most of these campers know that the verge is on a border so Emeryville/Berkely/CalTrans all point the responsibility at the other.

Unless you get the support of a big dollar business, like Home Depot threatening to leave, Emeryville/Oakland city council won’t care.

My wife is also being regularly harassed on the greenway by homeless people on bicycles coming up from this area.

The uptick of thefts and break ins at my nearby apartment building has grown in conjunction with this encampment.

I’ve also seen debris from this encampment overflow into the Shellmound off ramp, which is incredibly dangerous for vehicles coming around the corner, coming out of highway speeds. There have also been people in the road on some instances as well.

It’s endangering themselves, drivers, passengers, and nearby residents.

I work a business close to the encampment on 67th Street. People from the encampment have constantly been trying to come into our business to use the bathroom. When we deny them access to the bathroom they just end up defecating on the street in front of our business near our employee's cars. This is a major health concern for us.

People from the encampment also try to use our shop air to fix their bicycles. It has become quite a headache. Plus when customers come to our shop to purchase something they are greeted with a third world scene as they exit the ramp. This will only continue to get worse as Berkeley, Emeryville, and CalTrans continue to ignore it.

I have proposed that CalTrans install a fence in this area to keep people out. Maybe Berkeley, Emeryville, and CalTrans could sit down and discuss how to come together to possibly install a chain-link fence. This has worked in other areas around the city. This could be done with little cost.

The encampment knows this area borders three different jurisdictions and exploits it. They will continue to exploit this area until something is actually done to prevent their return. Cleaning it up just forces them out of the area for a few days then the encampment returns. This has been going on long enough and its time that these three groups got together and actually did something permanent.

All of them are worried that the ACLU and these self medicating victims of civil societys poverty pimps/ advocates will sue them. The ACLU has already sued Caltrans and they are now having to post eviction notices with each illegal camper, inventory all there crap and anything these loser cannot haul away needs to put into storage. All at the taxpayers expense.
FYI the average ACLU attorney makes a $130,000 per year.

Which will cost more? Settling with the ACLU for removing squatters who are actively destroying an area or the loss in tax revenue from businesses that move away or customers that no longer want to visit the area.

Personally they need to be removed and interned in some large gated lot far far away.

Witnessed a member of the illegal encampment throw an object at a car exiting the freeway and turning onto Shellmound St. today. Only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs as a result of this illegal encampment and its inhabitants.

Will people inhabiting these illegal encampments be allowed to roam the nearby streets each night during the shelter in place mandate?

City of Emeryville doesn’t care.

Large fire broke out in the camp tonight. Picture was taken shortly after the fire began and first responders were on scene. Thankfully they arrived quickly and routed traffic around the off ramp because shortly after this photo was taken there were loud bangs followed by even larger flames. If cars were still taking this exit it would have been extremely dangerous. Members of this illegal encampment may have been injured by this fire. This area needs to be cleaned to prevent future incidents. The density of the encampment and the number of fires here each night have been noted on this website numerous times. The residents of the nearby neighborhoods were also exposed to whatever chemicals accompanied the large black smoke cloud put off by the blaze in addition to the burning that occurs here on a nightly basis.

As the encampment grows so is the low level social behavior. This last week we discovered that one of the encampment dwellers is harassing one of our neighbors and hiding in our fire escapes. After reporting this we have no discovered ALL of the door handles for our fire escapes have been removed from our buildings.

Was nearly struck by a wrong-way driver on this exit tonight. Vehicle was pulling into a section of this encampment along the curve of the off ramp. The conditions here are becoming more and more dangerous.

Please do not repeat the same mistakes noted in the linked article. Fires have nearly gotten out of control in this area several times. This is only one of many dangers associated with the encampment.

It’s sad that the city of Emeryville continues to ignore this issue. We pay taxes and are not heard. Glad elections are coming up

Elections came and went. Current council went unchallenged. Still no plan has been shared on how to manage this situation. Its stark that Berkeley got away with shifting this over to their neighbors and now the weekly graffiti and trash surrounding this area has become an added cost to my own business. Still no response from Emeryville leadership. We already pay significant taxes to build housing for the homeless in this tiny town but we didn't sign up to enable an open air dumping site. This entire verge surrounding the offramp has become a symbol of Emeryville's incompetent leadership.
