I jog almost every day around 3:30-4:00pm and i stand at this crosswalk to cross the road. Sometimes I have to wait for 5-10 cars to pass until I can cross. No one stops, and it is not dark out so they clearly see me standing there. They are just cutting through the neighborhood at 40+ mph to get to forest rd. Please set up a traffic cop here, if you need someone to be a pedestrian crossing in the crosswalk, I would be glad to!! There is no red light and the signs in the middle of the road clearly state you must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk yet no one does. Thanks for your help in this matter.

I'm also a neighborhood runner and I cross this intersection on my route...I've never had anyone stop for me...but that's probably because I wait for a break in traffic and just book it across. Cars in new haven just generally don't stop and let people cross the street unless there's a person in the crosswalk. I don't think that's going to change anytime soon, but maybe the NHPD can set up a speed checker along the street that says "your speed is" and flashed when the driver is speeding.

This is true for children as well. The city does not enforce any traffic laws in New Haven!

The crosswalk on Blake Street near the park that has the push button flashing lights works great. It would be nice to see that installed at other problem locations. As I understand it this was a low cost solution. I don't know if you need to go through a safe-street application or you can try to contact Jim Travers directly- there was an article about this signal in the Independent last year.

Also Sargent Forte has been doing a GREAT job since taking over as District Manager, I have seen traffic enforcement taking place around the area. You may want to contact her for support in attaining the walk signal. Email is best, she will respond.

Works great? Glad that you think so. In my observation, only about one out of ten cars will acknowledge that flashing light and stop. Even fewer at rush hours. That said, it's better than nothing.

Thanks @Area Resident :) I will have my officers monitor this cross walk. Unsure about the cross walk signal but will forward to traffic and parking.

Thank You Sergeant!! I'm still running this route, and haven't noticed a change in driver behavior. Just hoping an incident doesnt happen like what happened at West Elm and West Rock Ave

I am going to assign the evening motor units to Chapel Street from Yale to Forest to monitor and enforce traffic violations, including speeding. They will be assigned begining Monday Nov. 4.
