And I can’t imagine this is good for our brand new sidewalks. I’ve actually already seen a crack in said sidewalk.

While the sidewalks and most other work along the Rucker Road Corridor are complete, there is still a good bit of work occurring as the contractor installs landscaping elements and addresses punch list items. Thus, the corridor remains an active construction zone.

Many of the locations where construction workers had been parking, however, have now been landscaped and are no longer available for parking. Too, some locations that may appear suitable for parking are private property on which the owner does not wish parking to occur. Thus, we are allowing some parking to occur on sidewalks so that road travel lanes do not have to be closed.

The parking that is occurring on the sidewalks is mainly of passenger vehicles that do not weigh enough to damage the sidewalks. Even if damage were to occur, the contractor would be responsible for that damage and would have to return that section of sidewalk to a like-new state.

We understand that the situation does inconvenience pedestrians who are using the sidewalks, and we do apologize for that inconvenience. Still, the alternative would be to close sections of road lane, which would inconvenience more people than are inconvenienced by allowing workers to park on the sidewalk. We have chosen the path that negatively impacts the fewest people.

Would've been faster to write "That city prioritizes storage of 5000-lb hunks of steel over the safety of its citizens." You're incorrect - blocking the sidewalk is not an "inconvenience" for walkers/cyclists, it's dangerous. I've been forced to walk in the street, with my children, while cars driving 40+ mph whip past me, multiple times. All so, what? Drivers don't have to lightly tap their brakes for a second?

Furthermore, if you read the initial note, you'd see that the vehicles blocking the sidewalk are typically parked mere feet from actual parking areas! Truly disappointing that the city continues to value car storage over people's lives.

I'll continue to report vehicles parked illegally on the sidewalk, and I'll file an ADA complaint. I'll also be contacting City Council.
