It’s horrible !!

Someone that has their faculties about them does not sleep on a sidewalk in broad daylight. When will the city take a real hard look at the mental health issue woven into our homeless population? Not to mention the effect watching this daily has on the psyche of the community. We are literally raising a generation of people that have become numb to this, they will have no empathy or compassion. It's not normal behavior to drive past an 80yr old filthy and underweight sitting in a gutter. I feel like as a city we are SO much better than being ok with this. Factor in the resources we have with UF and there's really no excuse to neglect our mentally impaired citizens.

Greetings on behalf of Alachua County Public Works,

We extend our most sincere apologies on what appears to be stagnant progress with resolving this issue. It appears that this item keeps circulating between the City of Gainesville, Gainesville Police Department, and back to our office. As you are aware, this is a very sensitive problem and we are trying our best to determine the most proper and dignified way to employ a permanent solution,

The previous requests and reports about this matter are not being overlooked nor going unheard.

This ongoing problem can be attributed to many factors. Personally I've seen a lack of consistency in regards to regular visits by city and county agencies. Citizen complaint is apparently the only driver that takes agencies to this stagnant problem. There's a lack of progressive thinking with a problem that's existed here for more than 15yrs. What can be done now:
1. Remove the tree at Circle K exit onto NE 16th Ave and plant another in Tom Petty Park. 2. Daily clean-up by Public Works since we allow this to happen. 3. Mental Health Outreach weekly. 4. Daily COPS team interaction to decrease open drug & alcohol use. 5. Engage our city/county commissioners with business owners in this area. 6. Encourage citizens to report violations 7. Install Anti-littering signage. 8. Encourage the public to donate to charities and not enable panhandling. All this can be done in the best interest of all while in accordance with constitutional rights and laws. Please, we have to start somewhere.

The drug dealing and once again prostitution continues at this location especially on the side of the beverage store. Campers congregate in woods adjacent to Tom Petty Park and on the access road to Circle K and Capital City Bank off of NE 2nd St.. Local small business in this area is suffering due to continual unsafe behavior by a few individuals. Perhaps Police Chief could visit with store owners here to show support and Codes could be proactive in monitoring this on-going problem.
