I'd like to add that many people, residents and visitors, exit @ the MacArthur/ San Pablo exit off of 580, and this is the first instersection they see as they 'pull into Oakland'. It is a representation of Oakland at its worst, and it is the antithesis to 'welcoming'. Though this property is not the entire intersection, I believe it would behoove the City of Oakland to focus just a tiny bit of its miniscule resources towards improving the state of this entry-point, and try to give off a better 'first impression'.

This has been a blighted spot for many years now, and the owner(s) has done little to work with the community despite many requests to clean it up.

Please do give this blighted lot attention. The owner should have to clean it and do something with the lot.

I'm glad to see this go to code enforcement. It's bad enough this owner forces an empty lot on us, but the lack of attention to his property is both inexcusable in specifically illegal. Go get em!

If it belongs to a developer who is doing nothing with it, why not approach them about a community garden? Anyone know who the developer is?

There are several HOTELS on the block that are havens for prostitution. Why aren't neighbors reporting this illegal activity to police? The hotels should be given notices to CLEAN UP their acts or close their businesses.

@ LQ37 - The hotel's corresponding crimes are brought up by neighbors through the proper channels (NCPC/direct communication with PSO/council person/etc) on a very regular basis. I personally worked side by side Dan Kalb on earth day this past year picking up litter in front of several of the motels and discussing issues with him for hours. Why would do you assume that folks are not actively working toward clean up?

@ Tobias - Although, I am a fan of guerrilla gardening, this particular lot is not ideal for a community garden. There are plenty of other lots nearby with known, cooperative owners that would make more sense - and some neighbors are in fact working in that direction.
The main problem with this lot is the debris that collects around the fence and sidewalk - liquor bottles, condoms and needles are a constant issue.

@ lcw I've lived in the area for 8 years and the problem of prostitution and drugs at these hotels seems to be getting worse, not better. I didn't know any one or group was addressing this problem because I haven't been informed of their efforts. If folks are working to eradicate the problem, more power to them. I walk my dog past these hotels regularly and have seen lots of illicit activity and have had to even dodge hypodermic needles. Do you know if the OPD is monitoring these hotels? Are they even on their radar?

@LQ37 - I suggest contacting your PSO or NCPC officer if you would like to be informed of what is being done, or would like for push for corrective action. Unfortunately, as you may be aware, the OPD is at a place where their areas of focus are dictated by resident demand. Areas that receive the most calls for service or are determined by NCPC priority are the areas that get attention.
It's up to us to be the squeaky wheel!

I cut and pasted the info for the crime prevention since I used to go long ago when we had a neighborhood watch over here by Grove Shafter Park and Paul Berlin was our PSO.

Unfortunately, the immediate area here has been rapidly deteriorating like a landslide.
The park (Grove Shafter Park), 36th street across from the park and all the Caltrans fenced areas have become infested with homeless, hookers, drug users, drunks and many mentally disturbed persons.

This issue has been sitting open for 4 years. How is this remotely possible?
