Here is the only solution:
Please remove any wheel stops, bollards and everything else that is causing all these crashes (17 we know of).

Someone is going to be killed here. I drove through Cardiff on the 101 yesterday and watched as two cars in a row took turns abusing two cyclists who were controlling lane 2. Even with the sharrows, the two drivers made a point of tailgating and honking at the cyclists, then close passing them while straddling the lane and shouting at them. It was ugly. I tried to talk to one of the drivers at a stoplight in Solana Beach and was met with profanity and threats.

A solution to the pedestrian and or sand issue would be to add a platform like in Del Mar over the San Dieguito River. This would buffer pedestrians and bikes By the way the Del Mar bridge always has sand on it also where bikes ride.

Engineering? Clean up the sand on the roadway...pretty simple.

Engineering might be very helpful, actually, since this sand on the roadway is actually trapped in the new cycletrack by the curbstops. If there's a way to keep sand out (or to allow it to disperse) out of the cycletrack, that would be quite welcome.

The PW Dept was been working on getting the lane swept since Monday. Currently it is tentatively scheduled for Thursday of this week.

The issue is the curb stops that trap sand and prevent cyclists from leaving the lane safely to overtake joggers and pram pushers. They must be removed before someone is killed. Numerous people have warned the City of Encinitas about this dangerous configuration. Encinitas may be held liable for any injuries that result.

Ray is correct. I have problems half the time I take that path to avoid cars. Clearing the sand only solves one issue, and only temporarily at that. I never used to have problems on this part of 101
