Thank you for contacting the Cambridge Traffic, Parking, and Transportation Department. There were never arrows at this location because it is too close to the previous intersection (Franklin St). At Franklin, both lanes that continue to Mass Ave are through lanes, so to add additional markings or signage here about the next intersection down was found to be confusing. Just past the intersection, we have through and right arrows in good condition, as well as two signs on the right hand side of the road indicating the lane arrangement. After observing the intersection for some time, we've found that drivers merging to the left lane are not confused, but rather are trying to cut the line.

Yes, I agree - drivers merging to the left ARE trying to cut the line - that's the point of my post. It's also why I wonder why there aren't earlier indicators for the split lanes ahead - it may serve as an additional deterrent of shame!

Last night I was able to convert the 4 faded "ONLY" markings into arrows, which is our new standard anyway. This puts the first set of arrows about 40ft in advance of where they were before.
