Sec. 23-85. - Material for sidewalks.
No sidewalk shall be built of brick or of any material other than that prescribed by the Engineering Standards for Construction of Public Improvements (1991 edition) unless authorized by the city engineer.
(Code 1982, § 20-85)
I would like to move forward with replacing only the damaged part of the brick sidewalk with concrete. Please leave the brick areas that are not damaged.
The way it is repaired/replaced is ultimately up to the city as sidewalks that run along public streets are in the city right of way and not personal property.
Ok, can we move forward with replacing the damaged part? It is a safety concern. I there is any way you can leave the brick that is not damaged that would be preferred because it is historical and beautiful and it is the only place in downtown Huntsville where there is original brick on both sides of the street. Thank you.
The Huntsville Historic Preservation Commission has purview over this work. I would make sure to "remind" Public Works of this fact and voice concerns to the HHPC.
Just in case someone says to the contrary, I looked up the citation. Local Act 3017 § (4)(C)(5) "Within or touching upon the boundaries of any Historic Preservation District, no charge shall be made in or upon any public street, way or park without the plan therefor having been submitted to the Commission"
Can I get an update on this project? The sidewalk is dangerous and slippery. I am OK to go with concrete. Do you have what you need to move forward or do I need to do something else?? Tina
Public Works is getting quotes from contractors to install a hybrid sidewalk of concrete and brick in the area. There is no timeframe for completion at this point, but we will keep the post updated as we receive information.
Public Works is still working to secure a local contractor for this project, but there is currently an extremely high demand for local contractors. Please reach out to the Public Works Department, (256) 883-3944, if you would like more information.
