Description

I saw a NH police officer riding eastbound on the sidewalk of Humphrey Street with no helmet and no hands. What kind of example does this set? Can you really convince kids they should wear helmets if they see bike cops going around helmet-less?

New Haven police have been ticketing cyclists lately for riding on the sidewalk. Do they feel the rules don't apply to them?

I understand that cops should be given a certain amount of leeway. But if they don't model good, law-abiding citizenship, how can other citizens -- particularly young ones -- be expected to follow suit.

It's little things like this that erode trust in law enforcement and create a kind of societal cynicism that stands in the way of progress.
