This is incredibly dangerous, both when crossing as a car and as a pedestrian. A stop sign is sorely needed.

What would trigger a city response? Adding to these comments or reporting it again as a new problem multiple times ?

A stop sign here would probably also help cut down on the number of commercial vehicles that use Green St to illegally bypass Mass Ave (Green is supposed to be no trucks starting at Sellers St.).

This is hilarious (well maybe not)--I'm just noticing the dates on these reports! I often cross this intersection coming down Hancock and it is pretty crazy. You have to slowly inch your way out until you can see any cars. Then sometimes the people on Green St. stop anyway even though they have the right of way, so you don't know what to do. Has anyone tried resubmitting this? If not, I'll try to remember to do so the next time I'm on foot at this intersection so I can take a picture.

This has been an issue for almost 5 years. Can the City address this?

The city's position on this intersection is that per Section 2B.04 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, they don't need to put in a stop sign until "... five or more crashes that involve the failure to yield the right-of-way at the intersection under the normal right-of-way rule have been reported within a 3-year period, or that three or more such crashes have been reported within a 2-year period." This has been reported under separate issue IDs previously as well.

They don't *have* to, but that doesn't mean they can't!

Also agree with above posters that the city could still do something. I was very close to being involved in a wreck at that intersection after dropping my daughter off from school at 8:55 am. I was on Green Street, going 15 mph, slowed before that intersection because of the danger, and someone coming along Hancock still didn’t see me. A passenger was in the car, and if we had had a wreck he would have received the blunt impact of a t-bone crash. I shudder to think even now and avoid that intersection. Would be willing to sign a petition or testify if needed.

My guess is a petition of abutters would be the best way to get the city to pay attention. Not that they're the only people driving through by any means, just the easiest to reach to organize. But presumably any Cambridge resident would be listened to as much.

There are some changes. Hancock now has signs sauce "crossing traffic does not stop" and the Green Street corner parking spot is for handicap which seems to have helped visabilaty. If a truck parks in that spot visabilaty is terrible. Anyhow, the intersection is better, but a for way stop would still be an improvement - I think.

someone needs to make a new request b/c this is old from 2013 and needs to be archived.

The topic of this intersection has rised up as a major thread in the neighborhood news group to the point that Councilor McGovern requested a traffic study for the area and the study has apparently been approved. Maybe something will come of the study. For myself, I still believe a stop sign is a good idea, and I still believe that the situation is better since the improvements noted in the June 19, 2019 posting above.
