This is indeed the worst part of the sidewalks on Birch Drive, and the conscientious homeowner has had the warning cone out there for many months.
But the sidewalks, and curbs as well, the entire length of this one-block street, have been collapsing for years.
When the roadway got repaved this summer, I was hoping the sidewalks would get some attention also, but alas, no.
Another particularly bad section is in front of 42 Birch, where an irresponsible previous owner tried to "fix" the walk, with unfortunate results. (This is a problem with giving homeowners the responsibility, rather than using professionals hired by the city.)
I realize that city finances are tight. The neighborhood is grateful that at least the recurring bad potholes in the roadway have now been taken care of, presumably for a long while.
The next objective is to address the conditions facing pedestrians.
