Description
With all the fabulous development of the waterfront, it seems there is a substantial increase in traffic and, unfortunately, speeding traffic, on Lake Street. There also seems to be a group of "racing"(?) cars that likes to go back and forth to the parking lot in front of the Coast Guard station. Their cars are deliberately speedy and noisy. Overall, the increased and speedy traffic creates a safety and noise issue. I don't know if there is a specific speed limit, but I think traffic needs to move more slowly than it does, and that this should be enforced.

The condo association at 216 Lake Street has been trying to get the City to do something about the increased speeding & reckless driving on Lake Street (and the incredibly dangerous pedestrian, railroad, bicycle, & vehicle intersection at Lake & Depot Streets) for MANY years... without any success whatsoever: https://seeclickfix.com/issues/3362899-speeding-on-lake-street
DPW has put it on the few residents who live on Lake Street initiate action and informed us we must get all the residents on Lake Street to sign a petition... and then it'll take YEARS for the City to do a "traffic calming study" and decide whether to do anything. Considering all of the businesses and public parks on Lake Street and the public use/recreational/pedestrian focus of the neighborhood... you'd think the City would be smart enough to curb the 60 MPH speeders and reckless driving without the few residents having to get out their pitchforks (or some tourists walking or on a bicycle getting run over by the speeders)... but no.

Thank you for your interest in safety on our roads.
Currently, traffic calming in Burlington is initiated by residents. At least 1/3 of the affected street or neighborhood needs to be interested in traffic calming, which is demonstrated through a neighborhood petition. Once a petition is received, it enters the project queue. Traffic calming requests are popular and take time to complete. The DPW manages an average of 4 traffic calming projects at any one time and new projects are advanced in the order they are received. The process generally takes a minimum of 2 years and up to 4 years to complete, while the City balances staff to manage projects and budgets to install traffic calming. A petition template is available on our website:
https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/DPW/Traffic-Calming-Neighborhood-Enhancement-Program
Please be advised that this program is currently being updated, but a neighborhood petition is still the best way to ensure we consider your request under the updated program.
This request will be closed until the petition is received. Thank you for your work to improve your neighborhood.
