  AJC - I called OPD ~2 weeks ago about the prostitution. They came out in the wee morning hours to “inspect” but I don’t know what they did. I think they have to catch things in the act to do anything. If you have enough documentation, maybe we can see if a news station will investigate why nothing is being done to try to get some attention??? I don’t know what else to do.

  I called OAK311 to get an update on this last week and they told me that because people are living in these cars and RVs, they won’t tow or ticket them since it is now considered a homeless encampment and there’s nothing we can do about them being there. (Note - that’s separate from the ILLEGAL activity that’s happening.)

  The more frustrating thing is knowing that this would NEVER be tolerated in neighborhoods like, Rockridge or Adams Point. Where are the police patrolling our area? They were here during the looting and then disappeared. West Oakland has become the dump site (in terms of trash, debris, broken down cars) of Oakland. There is consistent prostitution and drug dealing going on. Is it time to set up cameras facing outside the property to justify that intervention is needed? Also, walking our pup down some of the neighboring streets isn’t even possible because of all of the broken glass and debris on the sidewalks making it unsafe. I appreciate everyone for commenting on this thread.

  I spent months a while back back using See Click Fix (they never addressed issues), had multiple OPD officers come out and spoke with them directly (they said they couldn’t do anything and that Mayor’s office didn’t support removal), called the Mayor’s office (person opposed what I reported stating she thought Oakland was beautiful), etc. I lost a lot of time getting nowhere. I wish these channels were the answer but they weren’t for me. I’m game to try anyone’s ideas and just wanted to put it out there that we may need to try different routes. We could possibly petition for street sweeping on Ettie and if they ever start enforcing that on the RVs, that’s one step. I know someone in WEC tried this a few years back but couldn’t get the signatures needed. Maybe now it would be different. Thoughts?

  It’s straight lawlessness on Ettie now!

  Cars pulling up and double parking for drugs. Prostitution, Dogs off leash, loud generators screaming 24/7, trash down the whole street, no parking, etc.

  This is what us tax paying, law abiding citizens get eh?!? I don’t mean to be insensitive to the homeless issue, but this has now become a health and safety issue for the local community.

  THis is happening all over the city. Check out the camp on Manila Ave at 38th in the middle of a residential neighborhood. prostitution, drug dealing, open drug use. a girl died from an overdose 2 weeks ago. theft, arson, assaults, you name it. Oakland needs to deal with this problem for real.

  A site at Manila between 38th and 40th was "cleaned" on August 27th. After literally hours of cleaning and multiple garbage trucks worth of stuff driving away, the sidewalks are still blocked and there is trash everywhere. It was only a slight improvement. The idea is that the city can dispose of "whatever is released by the camp members". There were activists there making sure that no little pieces of treasured junk were mishandled. So, now we have situations like the attached. Sorry to sound callous but our neighborhood is fed up and we are generally the tolerant type. Citizens need to pressure the city to regulate these renegade camps and/or, centralize the residents in city-run lots. They are devastating Oakland's flatlands. Not to mention sales of heroin & meth, open drug use, arson, theft....

  They are not moving or closing camps now. The best you can do is get the camp on the city's list of cleanup, and continue to report dealing and other crime to the police. There should be an officer assigned to that street, get their name from your city council person. Contact your city council member and make a lot of noise there. Organize your neighbors and get the local businesses involved. It looks like there is a port-a-potty so they are already on the city list. You are going to have to apply consistent pressure to the city to get that port-a-potty serviced and keep the camp clean. Report trash piles and dumping to seeclickfix as soon as you see it otherwise you will have a garbage nightmare on your hands. The way to handle is to mitigate the problem but not going away anytime soon and only going to get worse is my prediction.

  I've had to call 9-1-1 twice in the past couple of weeks, I've also flagged down patrol cars while walking in the neighborhood to alert them of the problem . . .still no avail

  I've called OPD out to this area numerous times over the past few years and the few times that I've actually gotten to speak with them in person, there is always an excuse as to why they can't do anything. They've pretty much said, you are on your own. That said, one time I called and a Fruitvale beat officer was covering our district as an exception that night and she spoke to folks in every one of the RVs, tagged them with orange stickers, personally called me to give an update on the conversations she had, and they were all gone the next day, so, it is doable.

  Our solutions, if there are any, are:

  1) Show up in droves to the Beat 7x meetings and get our beat officer focused on this area. There is one coming up on September 17. (http://gisapps1.mapoakland.com/policedistricts/)

  2) Band together and call OPD everyday for the rest of the month to see if the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

  3) Log our actions and report to 7 On Your Side, KTVU Investigates etc. I have a contact with ABC 7 that I can try to use.

  If anyone wants to team up to do this, let me know. I'm out of town for the month but will do whatever I can to help. If we do successfully get this off of Ettie St. we'll have to consider investing in the tree logs like other streets in our neighborhood have done to block these areas from future use. Open to suggestions.....

  Hi Everyone,

  I attended the Beat 7 Zoom meeting last night and here is what I gathered... Officer Karl Templeman is our point of contact for concerns. He said to e-mail him at: ktempleman@oaklandnet.com to get help with these issues.

  Drugs: He said that any drug issues need to be reported to the OPD drug hotline - 510-238-DRUG. The tracking of the reports get organized differently with use of the drug hotline and he can vie for resources to be allocated differently from the department when multiple reports especially by multiple residents show up on the drug hotline. He still recommended the non-emergency line but said the officer on duty during that shift may not be able to get to the call b/c drugs can become a low priority during the shift. Drug hotline reports get saved and and addressed as a whole at later dates. Many West Oakland neighbors from other streets who attended the meeting said they banded together to call and "harass" the drug hotline and it worked but took diligence and time. Officer Templeman said the squeaky wheel will get the oil.

  Abandoned cars: If there are abandoned cars, he said he would personally sticker them and tow after 3 days.

  RVs: The RVs as homes can't be addressed but the criminal activity can.
