This item as at the City Plan Commission on 10/21/09. There was a 2 1/2 hour presentation by HANH & the Developer. Looks like a good redevelopment plan.
All of the information is at City Plan for your review. The item as tabled and will be heard again as a Public Hearing matter which allows for public comments, questions, and imput.
Get involved if you care about New Haven. It's easy to criticize.....be part of the solution.

Any chance there are pdf's that could be posted here?
First I've heard of this plan. Would be great to see this neighborhood fixed up.

Ben, per your request all I could dig up is this agenda that gives an overview of the project.

This is a HANH project but thier website is dated with info from 2003........and nothing about this project?
THUS....
You must call HANH at 498.8800 ask for Karen DuBoise-Walton...the Exec. Dir. or someone in development (Jimmy Miller?)
Please call City Plan if you want to see the details as filed with the CPC Commission. You need to come to City hall to look at the file. The developer gave a great PowerPoint show about all of the specific styles of homes, layout, composition, planning, and tech-mod-alterations to the site.
If you want to have more info about the developer look him up on-line:

I hope this info is somewhat useful and not too generic & vague!
:-)
Have a great weekend!

Would be awesome if you could keep us updated here.
Would love to see what they have planned.

That is pathetic that it even needs to BE discussed. Maintenance should have taken care of things as they were falling apart and it wouldnt have gotten this bad. If you had stayed on top of the mess it wouldnt have grown to this proportion.
If this was owned by some random person, the state would be all over it. What makes you guys above it all? This shouldnt even be an issue.
I AM getting involved by opening this up for discussion. I had no idea this was even owned by an organization.

Westville Manor is owned by HANH, it is not owned privately. Often boarded up apartments at Westville Manor are apartments that are vacant, not necessarily in disrepair. HANH will board up a vacant apartment to prevent people from getting inside the apartments while no one lives in it. Its the same idea behind boarding up foreclosed upon houses. Its not because the house is delapidated, but just to prevent people from getting inside.
A boarded up house does not necessarily mean a delapidated house or apartment.

Regardless of WHY they board them up its ugly and brings the tone of the place down. It makes it appear to be "less than" and Im sure the people that live there are mentally affected by it.
Something else should be done. Would you want to live right next to a boarded up building/apartment? How would it make you feel?

I agree with E - and I'm getting tired of the city criticizing people who criticize.
One is constructive (the advocacy and calling out of problems) while the other (the city trying to squash dissent) is not.
The city should spend its time fixing the problems, not wasting most of their time trying to cover their A--es.

It does really look awesome and I've noticed that there aren't many boarded up houses over there recently.
I had no idea that boarded up didn't mean they were in disrepair.
That is a bad policy from Housing Authority. The boarded windows really bring down the character of the building.
Should we close this issue or wait till the new construction to judge?

Crime is rampant in the area, and there is a huge amount of drug activity.
This is how the City deals with people who can't afford a decent place to live in New Haven?
