Yes! As a resident of Mercer I strongly second this request. Cars treat this stretch of Ryckman like a speedway. This corner is also a way to get up to Ridgefield Park. Heavily used by families and children.

Slowing down traffic on So. Main at this spot needed. That hill and narrowness of road especially when cars parked on So. Main makes it very dangerous heading north to the traffic light at Ryckman which btw is not always working. In past 12 months, I'd estimate one of the two lights for northbound traffic has been out. Pretty sure, currently traffic lights o.k. but not 100% positive about that.
Racing between New Scotland and Madison Ave. on South Main is far too common...just like Manning Blvd. between New Scotland and Western, but that is a safer road with visibility of the road is much better.

oops- Now I get it...different intersection...but I agree...the curve in the road at Ryckman/Peyster makes a stop sign on Ryckman a very good idea...nonetheless...too much speeding of cars..but I do understand the hesitation for police officers to do traffic pull-overs during the pandemic. Tough job these days and appreciation for APD for sure.

I also witnessed this accident and agree that a four way sign is needed. There are children on this block, playing outside, and it is not safe. Cars fly down the street all the time.

Has the council person been made aware of these concerns. Maybe they can get the appropriate departments involved in getting some solutions.

Oh it’s not just there, S. Main and Ryckman there’s a stop light. I’ve watched people blow down the hill heading towards Madison doing literally 80 mph! A city truck one night caught air. WTF is wrong with people?!

This is the problem with our city's love of stop lights. In other places, there would be a four-way stop there. EVERYONE would have to stop and at least if someone ran the stop sign, traffic going the other way would be stopping (less dangerous). Not sure why they stopped the crosswalks on S Main before Ryckman, because that intersection could also really use crosswalks.

I regularly watch cars accelerate down the hill to "catch the green." at Ryckman and S. Main. Or the same coming from Ryckman, which means they continue speeding down that street.

I agree 100%. I live on Ryckman and cars go 50+mph down the street it’s terrifying. I have almost been hit pulling out of my driveway and my son was almost hit by a car that was going so fast it couldn’t stop so it swerved around him into oncoming traffic. There are kids on Ryckman as well. Someone is going to be seriously injured if something is not done. There needs to be a stop sign!

There’s a stop sign at the intersection of Myrtle and Ridgefield. No one stops. At best, motorists will roll through it, but the majority just ignore it and speed through it, some at a very high speed.

I couldn’t agree more. Stop signs necessary at that intersection. Cars speed regularly down this stretch of Ryckman. I don’t feel safe crossing the street with my kids because the curve of the street makes it hard to see cars coming in both directions and by the time you can see them if they are going too fast you have to run to get to the other side. I’ll bring this to Owusu’s attention, too. I know he focused a lot of effort and attention on getting the sidewalk on Woodlawn, which is a tremendous improvement.

Regarding the Myrtle/Ridgefield stop sign, is there a “new” flag for the stop sign? So people coming down Myrtle used to it being a straightaway know they need to stop? Until the traffic calming measures occurred on Woodlawn, that new stop sign was incredibly hard to see. Personally, when I drive down/walk down Myrtle I see people stopping, or at the very least slowing down, which is an improvement. But new stop signs need something to alert cars that something has changed. Your argument is the main one I hear against stop signs. But lights are no better and way more dangerous (because if you run a red, oncoming traffic has a green, not a stop). Albany has to get over it’s hatred of stop signs.

Since coming into office, many of you have come to me concerned about the lack of a stop sign on the corner of Ryckman and Peyster , citing various traffic safety concerns in the neighborhood. Now, I am pleased to announce that city has finally installed a stop sign on this corner.

I want to thank everyone who came to me with this issue. Your voices are what prompted the city to act on installing the stop sign.
