In the event that the street is wide enough for a bike lane in one direction only, I would strongly suggest that sharrows be striped in the other direction. Without sharrows going the other way, there is a high risk of people riding the wrong direction in the bike lane (as I am told is common on Humphrey St).

Also, wherever there is space for a bike lane in only one direction, or where there is heavily used on-street parking on a steep incline, I would recommend that the bike lane be striped in the uphill direction, with sharrows in the downhill direction. It is dangerous to stripe a bike lane adjacent to heavily used on-street parking on steep downhills.

This treatment, with a wide bike lane in the uphill direction and sharrows in the downhill direction, is known as a “climbing lane” and is widely used in Seattle (a city which I would estimate has even more steep hills than San Francisco).

It is truly a shame this did not come up before Edwards was repaved, as—in the event that a bike lane will fit on only one side of the street—the brand new double-yellow center line will have to be ground out and re-applied a few feet over to one side.

I have discussed this with Traffic and Parking and will follow up.

I believe there is room for two bike lanes and will measure with you Brian.

I will also ask that Traffic and Parking put a speed tube down to track current speeds as my guess would say they are 10-15 over limit average.

Bike lane here would help reduce the speeds and make a good connection on a recently paved street between multiple neighborhoods including Cedar Hill, Fair haven, Jocelyn Square and East Rock.

The City informed the Register that they were going to pave Edwards street between Whitney ave & Orange st. . That was suppose to occur immediately after Whitney was paved. I and a few others over the years have talked about placing a stop sign at Livingston & Edwards - but who pays any mind to those things ?

I agree with Ben that speeds are currently WAY over the limit here. A bike lane would reduce speeds by narrowing the travel lane, which on a street like this should be no wider than 10 feet.
