Description

The entire Pearl St block is not well light--with only 4 street lights for the entire block. From time to time, the park is visited by children--rarely since there is not much of a playground anyway. On top of that there is no way a child can safely play in the surrounding grass area. The grass is scattered with broken glass beer bottles, beer caps, condoms and tobacco packaging.

The gate to this park is left open, even at night! People who do not appear to be conducting legitimate business appear from midnight-dawn in that park. The worst part about it, is that there are no lights, so at night people just appear from the shadows and walk away. These individuals change their behavior when they notice they have been seen. It is a shame that it has become the norm for vehicles to drive slowly and aimlessly throughout this neighborhood.

Walking home from my car at night is something I dread. Even if I called the police every single time I witnessed suspicious behavior by that park, by the time the police arrive, the perpetrators would be gone. The Town of Hempstead either needs to close that park-- because it is not even a real park at this point-- or install bright lights and install cameras in every corner. It is not safe.
