I hate to say it but absolutely agree with City of Cambridge Neighbor on this one. The library looks terrible without these trees. Why were they removed?

This is disappointing. Didn't Cambridge just release their Urban Forest Master Plan about the importance of mature, off-sidewalk shade trees. I'm surprised these were allowed to be cut down.

Thank you for reporting this tree issue. The East Cambridge Open Space Trust, through an extensive community process, developed a new design for this park based around the concepts of an "open space reading room" and improved access and pedestrian circulation. The new concept did not provide for the retention of the 3 existing trees. Significant effort was put into the design process in an attempt to preserve these trees but in the end it was not feasible.

This seems quite egregious. I'm surprised a landscape design wasn't able to accommodate this mature trees. When was the public tree hearing to consider their removal?

A tree hearing was not required since the trees do not reside in the public right of way. The trees were approved for removal through the expanded tree removal ordinance.
