Description
when crossing elm street from the condos to the Senior Center. you have a crosswalk, but when you get to the Senior Center Property you are forced to walk in the driveway because there is no sidewalk from Elm St up to the building. This is a dangerous situation for the eklderly and physically Handicappped

This is the second report about this issue, the first being ID #207099 on 07/16/2012. There has not been any action to rectify the short-coming to date. This is a serious problem that is truly dangerous. I request an up-date to these reports and wish to know the Town's intent.
Further, signage on the roadway is inadequate. Very few drivers are aware that they are required to stop for anyone in a crosswalk! Coupled with this, traffic routinely exceeds the posted limit and is surprised quickly as they round the blind curve in the road northbound. The only sign in this instance is warning for trucks entering / exiting, probably from the original construction of the Senior Center. What is needed are signs to announce the facility proximity and warn of a pedidtrian crossing! I suggest even a pylon in the center of the road with signage reflecting the law. Last winter a stray sheep was hit by a motorist near this area. Could an elderly pedestrian be next? Too much time has lapsed from the original report. Please initiate some action before there's a catastrophy.
Sincerely, John Gurney

Hi - I'm a member of the Council. I don't have direct ability to speak for DPW. I will be curious though to understand whether the proximity of the curve could be a reason why a sidewalk wasn't extended there in the first place.
As you've noted, in the absence of a controlled intersection it can be difficult to slow traffic without signals. This is a similar scenario to the discussions the Council has ongoing with desires for mid-block crossings along Hazard Avenue.
If you would like to email me at blee@enfield.org I will follow up with you directly-- and/or have the appropriate staff do so. Will also request Ms. Lather and the St Ctr Advisory team is brought up to date on this request , too.

We have new crosswalk signage on Elm. Thank you, this makes crossing a little safer, although vehicle speeding remains challenging.
Please pursue the missing sidewalk access into the Senior Center, as pedestrians still have to share the driveway with elderly drivers.
