Agreed, City if Cambridge Neighbor. The toughest part of a winter storm in Cambridge is that after it stops there’s no place to park your car. I have no use of mine in snowy winters as I dare not lose whatever parking place I had. Hard on people with handicaps and/or arthritis,
Some patience will be required after a storm like this. They generally clear a driving path during the storm and they may or may not do a hauling operation for the rest in the coming days or weeks. They generally do not focus resources on clearing parking spaces.
The city should focus on maintaining parking for it's residents. It is what a lot of residents need to live here. The city has deferred responsibility for clearing the sidewalks of snow to private residences. The city should clear the public streets of snow and haul off residual piles of snow as soon as possible.
City snow operations will continue today and overnight, focusing on locations identified by the Public Works, Traffic, Police, Fire, and School departments. Public Works continues to coordinate with our public safety partners to ensure roadways are prioritized to maintain emergency vehicle access. The City will try to plow snow to the curb where possible during a storm, but we do not plow out parking spaces.
No one is asking for parking spots to be plowed--just that the public city streets be plowed well and in a timely fashion .
This can't be done with shovels. It takes specialized vehicles and equipment which the city has or contracts out for.
anonymous, yes in fact, people are asking for parking spaces! We have no where else to put our cars in the winter. The wealthy have driveways but most of us don't, and people have all kinds of reasons to need a car: mine is being handicapped. Year after year now since I could no longer shovel myself a parking space every night after work I've just had to leave the car till spring. This also means I can't do a real grocery run or take packages to the PO, etc. If Public Works says "the City does not plow out parking spaces" then the Americans with Disabilities Act will have to be pointed out to the City.
Thank you for your patience. Our crews will continue working throughout the day. A crew has been sent to evaluate the roadway conditions at this location.
