Residents generally shovel to the extent required to extricate their vehicle from the snow. Residents may decide not to shovel out their car if they are able to remove it from the on street spot without doing so. Sometimes a resident will shovel to create a spot where snow had existed before. In both cases, the spot when it becomes vacated becomes available for use by any resident, regardless of whether they have shoveled out a spot or not. Vehicles are required to be moved at least every 72 hours for Malden residents, so someone choosing not to shovel out their car would have to be able to otherwise extricate the vehicle to comply with this regulation.
