I really hope the city is reading this. And sees that the bike community they are creating thinks stop signs are unnecessary. Foolish.

The vehicle approach to this intersection includes yield signs. The bicycle stop sign is necessary as there is no legal requirement per Massachusetts State Law that drivers yield to crossing cyclists.

What about the legal requirement for the city to not create a dangerous situation (bikes overflowing the island bc they have a green bike light and then all get stuck at thr stop sign). Also the city is free to place a stop sign for the cars just like it does at any other intersection where safety dictates that traffic should stop of other traffic

Why create a wonderful new PBL if you are going to have it end in a death trap? I seriously thought someone had just misread the plans when they installed the stop sign. It never crossed my mind that the city actually thought the stop sign was a good idea

What about the legal requirement for thr city to not create a dangerous situation (giving bikes a green light and then having them pile up on the island bc they cannot cross) there is no law preventing the city from deciding which set of traffic must stop (in other words the city can require the cars to stop.. the city could even make that a light controlled crossing!)

Why created a wonderful new PBL and have it end in a death trap? I naively assumed someone read the plans wrong i never expected thr city to respond that their plan was always to set bikes up to have to pile up on the island or into cambridge street.

We are looking at making further changes to the signal as part of ongoing work in the area; we will investigate the possibility of adding signal control to the right turn slip lane as part of that work.

I literally thought this was a quick fix and that someone had misread the plans and that the stop sign was supposed to be for the cars. I cant believe noone thought hmmm maybe an island that already gets crowded with pedestrians is a bad place to have bikes stop and we should make the cars stop instead. The fact that this needs further examination is shocking to me.

Despite the city’s contentions to the contrary, state law does require motorists to yield to pedestrians. A cyclist who has dismounted (or even one who is standing astride their bike after stopping for this sign) would clearly qualify as a pedestrian and must be yielded to. In addition, the presence of actual pedestrians crossing here would in and of itself demand the addition of signage warning motorists to yield. WTF, City of Cambridge- this isn’t rocket science!

State law does indeed require drivers to yield to pedestrians - this location is clearly posted with pedestrian warning signs.

As previously noted, we will review opportunities to provide signalized control of the right turn slip lane as part of an upcoming project which would thus allow us to remove the stop sign for the bicycle approach.
