This intersection is dangerous. I have two neighbors who have been hit by drivers (one severely) crossing here. I have a camera roll full of pictures of tire tracks all over the sidewalk on the northeast corner.

My suggestion (I live on this block): take Beakes down to one westbound lane and move it away from the curb, further south. Also, put N Main on a 4-to-3 road diet and put a protected bike lane on the east side. This will shorten the pedestrian crossing distance across Beakes/Kingsley & possible N Main; and make the turn radius less severe for vehicles turning from Beakes onto N Main so they don't have to drive over the sidewalk. Road dieting N Main will also likely reduce the number of utility poles and trees that regularly get hit by big trucks by creating some distance between the curb and the right of way and slow cars down.

N.Main is a state highway and thus it's configuration is controlled by MDOT. No road diets or other lane changes without the State's permission. A MUCH cheaper and better solution would be to set back the stop line for the southbound left turn lane. This will give turning vehicles more room to make the turn without changing the whole road. This was done a few years ago and greatly helped the problem. However when N. Main was re-paved the stop line was returned to it's present bad position. Also there are 6 houses in a row (approx. 15 units of affordable housing) in the 500 block that are slated to be destroyed and probably replaced by another 4 or 5 story condo box. With this building addition there will be an additional 30-50 units of very expensive housing in the same location. This will greatly increase local turning traffic and make any road diet even more onerous and punishing.
