Description
The intersection of Winter and Washington Square North needs to be addressed. First, there is no crosswalk here going from the corner to a main gate into the common. It is heavily trafficked by pedestrians but is also used as a cut through for cars. There is also usually a car parked between the corner and the fire hydrant on winter which effectively makes that little stretch of winter street one lane wide despite being a two-way road. Eliminating one space of street parking could help. I often see drivers rounding that corner then slam the brakes because they are face to face with oncoming traffic.
Additionally, the 90 degree turn that 1A makes is incredibly confusing for first time visitors, some of which come to a complete stop in both directions because they are unsure of which way 1A goes. This can be easily addressed with street painting or better signs.
Everyone drives way to fast on Washington square north between winter and pleasant streets. It’s clearly being used as a cut through by non-locals. No one comes to a complete stop. There should be a speed bump, raised crosswalk or other traffic calming measures.
