On numerous days I've been driving west thru downtown on Santa Cruz Ave, between 2:30 and 3:30 pm, to find young people (middle schoolers?) on bikes riding head-on toward me on the wrong side of the street, in the blocks between Univ. Ave and Chestnut where east-bound side is closed to traffic. Usually it is one or two isolated riders; they pass me on my left (center of the street). Yesterday it was two groups of three riding three-across. I stopped and got out to ask that they please ride down Oak Grove instead where there is a bike lane. Four ignored me but as I became more insistent and pleading, two of them got off and walked their bikes on the sidewalk. There IS a sign where the street is blocked off at University saying bicyclists must walk their bikes. I feel strong signage is needed like "WRONG WAY" on the sides of the westbound lane -- I have even seen a CAR drive around the blockade and up the wrong side. I called the non-emergency police line; the woman there took note of the problem but said they don't have any availability to patrol that area because of recent cuts to the police dept. THANK YOU for considering this problem.
