Requests: road safety
91-145 Inman St Cambridge, MA, 02139, USACars drive down Inman Street at 45-50 mph because Prospect St is too narrow for the traffic flow. There are a lot of kids, bicyclists, etc who are at a safety risk. Please install effective speed bumps, and consider speed enforcement monitoring especially at am and pm commute times. Thanks!!
91-145 Inman St Cambridge, MA, 02139, USAEvery time it rains, a huge lake forms in the road here. The water drainage is not right. People walking on the sidewalk get soaked and it’s a safety hazard for cars and bicycle riders. Water sits around for days and that’s not good for a number of reasons. Please fix so the water goes into a drain instead of just sitting in the swale waiting to evaporate.

I noticed another poster wrote to complain that the NEW raised intersection at Inman & St. Mary is too steep or too high, and it made me realize that perhaps it's now "Raised Intersection Season"! If so, I want to get in on it:
I've been asking for over =3 years= now for a raised intersection over on Maple Ave & Marie Ave. We have a very dangerous situation there where speeding cars come down Maple from Cambridge St & put little kids/families who use the tot playground (corner of Maple and Marie) at high risk for serious injury or worse. Very dangerous.
It is actually very dangerous for everyone who lives on Maple. Cars often turn down Maple Ave from Cambridge St and speed all the way down to Broadway. It seems to serve some drivers as a vent for road rage. This kind of dangerous driving is not welcome here! Many little kids and families. pets, etc live on this street and whenever I hear one of these speeding cars, my heart just goes into my throat.
It looks like they recently put up a sign with a teeter-totter on it about 100 feet before the intersection, on the opposite side of the road, and partly obscured by trees. This is a wholly inadequate remedy.
Please put a speed-reducing raised intersection there! There's nothing like a lapful of coffee to deter a driver from speeding down a particular street!
288 Harvard St Cambridge MA 02139, United StatesWe have a stretch of side walk that's severely deformed. This neighborhood has heavy foot traffic with many elderly including legally blinded citizens walking through on a daily basis. This is a major safety concern that should be addressed immediately before causing any serious injuries.
24 Leonard Avenue Cambridge, MA, 02139, USAWe had a near incident with my son almost being driven over by a car today. I wish I could say that he stopped and looked before crossing the street but I know that he didn’t and this is something we are working with him on. Can we please though get signs for cars to slow down. We have so many kids on our street and we need for both kids and cars to watch out better.
I am very chocked tonight and I hope hope hope that I never have to have a situation with a worse outcome but I am worried. Can we please do something with traffic speeding down our street and clearly mark out that there are many kids living here. Tell me what i can do and let’s hope that we just go for bad statistics but also close to incidents for taking action. Kind regards, Martina Bahlmann 12 Leonard avenue. Phone: 617 669 1614
Cambridge 02139 United StatesSAFETY ISSUE - Water fountain has way too much water pressure and is much too powerful for the toddlers that this playground is designed for. Please repair before a child gets injured from strength of water pressure.
22 Saint Mary Road Cambridge, MA, 02139, USAThe top right metal piece of this swing became detached and fell, slamming into my 7 year old daughter’s head. This is the second time this swing and this specific piece has become detached and fallen while she was on this swing. The safety of this equipment needs to be reviewed immediately My daughter has 2 gashes in her head as a result of this accident.
Maple Ave & Marie Ave Cambridge, MA, 02139, USA
Serious Safety Issue - Risk of Small Child Injury or Death:
This intersection - at Maple Ave. & Marie Ave. - has a tot playground. Cars - irregularly but often, and at any time of day or evening - barrel down Maple Ave. from Cambridge Street, treating Maple Ave. as a speedway and probable vent of road rage accumulated while navigating Inman Sq or elsewhere along Cambridge Street.
This is ordinarily a very quiet and relaxed neighborhood, and families and caretakers with little tots access this park throughout the daytime, and evening in the summer, on every day of the week. Every single time I hear one of the aforementioned speeding cars, hitting peak acceleration just about at the tot park, my heart lurches into my throat bc I am waiting to hear the ghastly sounds of a child or family member being hit & killed.
Maple Ave was ripped up Summer 2018 for repeated reports of a natural gas smell, and the road surface repair since has been - at best - piecemeal. I am hoping the City will be doing a proper repave of the street, but while they're at it it would make imminent sense to add a raised intersection here at Maple & Marie. The increase in safety will be vast and the potential for tragedy will be significantly reduced.
I first reported this problem last summer and was told I would have to get signatures from the neighborhood showing overall support for such a feature. I have little-to-no time for such a thing as I work full time, and most of my neighbors do as well. However, having lived here since 2006, and, not only raising my own child here but watching (now) two generations of other little kids growing up here, I have no doubt such a feature would put many family's minds to rest.
Please find out if there's a better way to get this done than my taking half a day to ring doorbells and another half to canvas the playground.
Do we have to wait for a tragedy for a simple & intelligent repair to be implemented?
