1-57 Banks St Cambridge, MA, 02138, USA
The city recently changed the lane usage on Mt. Auburn just past Banks St. to restrict the right lane to only buses and bikes and limit right turns to alternate with cars going straight. As a result, the time in each light cycle for right turns from Mt. Auburn to Putnam is very much shortened (and even more so since pedestrians frequently cross against the crosswalk sign, preventing cars from turning right on the green arrow). The follow on consequence of this is that traffic backs up on Mt. Auburn and backs up excessively (more than a block of constant standing traffic for significant periods at peak commuting times) creating a great deal of noise and emissions pollution on this entirely residential street and causing access issues for residents of Banks Street. Please re-evaluate the light cycle at the intersection of Mt. Auburn and Putnam to alleviate the traffic back up. It seems one easy fix might be allowing right turns from Mt. Auburn to Putnam to occur simultaneously with traffic coming from Putnam across to Mass. Ave. or right onto Mt. Auburn (past the light). These traffic flows would not conflict with one another and would allow right turners from Mt. Auburn to turn onto Putnam without being blocked by pedestrians crossing against the walk signal. This in turn should alleviate the back up, at least partially. Thank you.
