    Catastrophic Erosion of Oakland Estuary Canal bank
    between Fruitvale & High St. Bridges

    Dear Alameda Public Works Managers:

    In less than two years the Oakland side of the Estuary Canal has eroded from the original 10 - 15' width that has been there for centuries, to 1 to 18" in large swaths of the bank between the Fruitvale Bridge and the metal walk way, half way to the High St. Bridge. It is possible that the adjacent residents of the homeless camp have damaged the bank by scrambling up and down the walls to reach the water.
    One of the trees has its roots totally exposed in a tangled grey mass from the top of the bank to the water.
    I am concerned that if something is not done immediately, the entire bank may fail, taking with it all of the trees, the sidewalk and, eventually, the roadway. Meanwhile the damage to the bank, fish and wildlife is ongoing.
    I know you have other important things to do, but if you could send someone out to look at the bank and consider doing something immediately to stabilize the bank, it would be greatly appreciated and would avoid enormous damage to the City and to the wildlife and fish in the Tidal Canal if the entire bank and road way slides into the water.
