  • Park Maintenance Acknowledged
Grove Shafter Park Oakland, California - Hoover-Foster

I spoke with Alameda County Vector Control about Issue 609298, and they made the following recommendations:

    1. The Parks Department needs to remove the ivy that is along the fence on the highway side of the children's playground. This foliage is creating a home for the rats. That's where they hang out during most of the day.

    2. Cleaning: There are not enough (covered) trash/recycling receptacles. When people visit the park and litter, rats consume the food waste.

I am also asking for signage about not feeding the pigeons.

This is NOT a complaint about homeless people in the park, but rather the lack of park maintenance that is creating the conditions for the rats to thrive.

The park will be used by people no matter what and littering is a reality without signs and proper garbage disposal options, so that's what I'm asking for.

I'm creating this new issue because it looks like service request 609298 was abandoned once it was hot-potatoed to Alameda County Vector Control.

Like I said in my comment on that issue, I called Vector Control. They've said that a) vermin in public parks are not under their purview and b) they never received any report about this.

Meanwhile, there is a visually stunning number of rats running around on the children's playground and living in the bushes to the left of it.
