I was driving through Chicopee Center on Wednesday after the storm and I am concerned about handicap access to sidewalks. A man in a power chair was proceeding along Center St. in the road. I was wondering why this poor guy was actually in the road. Then we noticed the sidewalks (with their handicap access plates) were inaccessible for this individual in the power chair (the sidewalks were shoveled and clear). Every access had a snow berm in front of it and the sidewalk along the former gas station property (corner of Hampden and Center) was not shoveled at all. He ended up proceeding up Hampden St. in the road up the left side of the street so he was facing traffic. I think this is unacceptable to have sidewalks downtown unavailable to handicap individuals. I realize the owners of the abutting properties have to keep their sidewalks cleared but the access from the street has snow plowed right in front of it. I have no idea how you could address this issue but seeing these folks in power chairs trying to get around and they have to resort to being in the street is just not right. Especially when accommodations have been made in the construction of these sidewalks to make them accessible to them. Thanks for your attention to this matter.
