    BETTER TRAFFIC CALMING SOLUTIONS NOW.
    Haight & 5th, Haight & Linden, Haight & 6th

Re: Excessive Speed, Speed Too Fast for Conditions, Failure to Yield, Vehicle Accidents & Near Misses (much of which does NOT appear in statistics).

You shot down a neighborhood request to make 5th & Haight and all way stop.

I see you are considering a request to make 6th & Haight an all way stop.

You shot down our neighborhood request to create a safer intersection and make Haight & Linden an all way stop.

You had another option: You could have employed speed humps on the 500 block of Haight, calming the traffic.

You had a third option: Convert northbound Linden (a one lane street fronting a park), between Santa Clara & Lincoln Ave, into a one way. By doing so, you encourage safer use of Linden, a very narrow street, which currently requires drivers approaching each other on Linden to either BACK OUT of the block----yes, into a non-controlled intersection of Haight or Lincoln---- or illegally drive up on the sidewalk.

Instead, you painted six (6) oversized red zones at Haight & Linden, which are supposed to make it easier for the Linden drivers to see approaching traffic. You did the same at Haight & 5th.

What did happen is you've made it easier for some of the many early and late commuters to speed on Haight, knowing they needn't stop at Linden & that Linden drivers can now see THEM, the speeders, better!

You also, needlessly took more curbside parking from the neighborhood, by employing oversized red zones. When questioned about the EXCESSIVE red zone length, you said you were responding to neighborhood safety concerns & were justified to double the six foot mandated length by using your "discretion."

What you have done is facilitate a LESS SAFE street and create a hardship for our elder, disabled neighbors.

I put it to you that you may use your discretion in a more positive way.
Simply, all way stops are safer than two way stops.

Parts of Oakland, near Rockridge, seems to recognize how to make streets safer---they've installed both roundabouts and all way stops.
The City of Alameda TE could easily look toward the success of Rockridge, use discretion and common sense to effectively make our streets truly safer.

    Thx.

Please repaint the crosswalk on Haight Ave at Linden. It was compromised by the City's sewer contractor.

    Thank you.

p.s. I've also submitted separate requests to install a stop sign at E/B & W/B Haight @ Linden and to completely clean the 500 block of Haight of the fine dirt, (now a respiratory health hazard), produced and left behind by the City's sewer contractor, Ranger Pipelines.

  • Haight Ave & Linden St Alameda, CA, 94501, USA - Alameda

Please survey the intersection of W/B & E/B Haight Avenue @ Linden Street for stop sign installation.

As you know, this intersection is adjacent to Longfellow Park, which hosts youth Park & Rec programs & welcomes all ages. Haight Ave is also a walk way for Paden ES, Island HS & Encinal HS, as well as the twice weekly farmers' market. It is also Avenue of the Fairies and draws many small people to view multiple fairy doors.

As you also know, there are currently stop signs at W/B & E/B 6th and 5th Streets. Linden is mid-block to both those streets and the current practice of many drivers transiting Haight between 6th & 5th Streets is to speed for that stretch, endangering any ped or cyclist on or crossing Haight at Linden. This situation is exasperated by San Jose Avenue slow street, which diverts some drivers to Haight.

Please prioritize this urgent traffic/ped/cyclist safety concern.
    Thanks you.
