Linden Street Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem
With students now back at SSU, it has become apparent that there are a number of landlords renting apartments to more than the allowable number of tenants. And this past weekend, there were several large and loud alcohol-fueled parties resulting in disruptive crowds and lots of litter. At one location on Linden Street on Saturday at 11pm, there were approximately 40 drunk students acting in an antisocial manner. We know that the police need to be called when this happens. Can you please advise us on what other steps we should take to see longer-term solutions to this growing problem and greater accountability for landlords engaged in illegal renting? Also, is there a greater role that the SSU Police Department could play in responding to student parties held off campus and in holding SSU students accountable? We would appreciate your guidance.

On Green Street - especially between Leach Street and Messervy Street - a good number of young children from several households, some of whom are living with disabilities, play outside on a near daily basis. Our neighborhood children ride their bicycles and scooters or kick the soccer ball around. We all very much welcome their youthful spirit and their desire to play outdoors, and their presence is part of what makes our neighborhood so special. We want to do whatever we can to keep them safe. At all times when children are playing, adults from the neighborhood stand watch and warn the kids of oncoming cars, but many cars come through at a high rate of speed and there have been a few close calls. Is it possible for the city to install signage to aid drivers in understanding the need to slow down and watch for playing children? Any help you can offer will be very much appreciated. Thank you!

The Broadside newspaper has set up a distribution box chained to a utility pole on Salem Street near Lafayette Place. This does not seem appropriate or legal and we would appreciate seeing it removed. Our neighborhood does not have other newspaper distribution boxes, they are unsightly, and their contents very often become litter in the streets. Is there a permitting process for those who wish to install newspaper boxes like this one? Thank you for your attention to this matter.

73 Lafayette Street Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem
Traffic approaching Derby Street on Lafayette must choose one of two lanes. The right lane is supposed to be Right Turn Only. The left lane is for traffic going straight ahead towards Front Street or turning left towards Washington Street. However, anyone who drives or walks here knows that people don't know what to do because there are no visible signs, and the arrows on the pavement are almost completely faded and too close to the intersection. Drivers need clearer markings and earlier warning as they pass the Wendy's at Peabody Street. This has become a problem because drivers planning to travel forward towards Front Street often occupy both lanes and end up in a dangerous confrontation in the middle of the intersection. Additionally, drivers wishing to turn right end up being stuck behind drivers who are waiting to travel forward, even though the right turn arrow is green. There is a lot of honking of horns and yelling of profanities by those who want to make the right-hand turn. The recent repairs in this area are amazing and we are very grateful for all of the work that has been done to improve this intersection and the road in the Washington Street / Hatches Wharf corridor. Drivers and pedestrians alike are already enjoying the benefits of these new improvements. Clearer lane markings and signage for this particular approach will really help, too. Thank you!

Ed the Plumber lives at 22 Green Street and is presently tossing all of the snow from in front of his house into the street. Now, cars can not pass at Green and Eden because the massive chunks of snow he put there are so large. We neighbors have all spoken to him repeatedly in the past about this and he simply does not care what we say, despite the ordinance making his behavior illegal. This morning, each house cleared out the ends of their driveways and he has now just blocked us all back in. Please send someone to speak with him and make him stop. This is getting very heated and very bad.
