  • State Street And Broadway Albany, New York - Albany

Crossing the street at the intersection of State Street and Broadway is dangerous and needs to be fixed.

The crosswalk never signals walk, unless the crosswalk button is pushed. Even after pushing the button, pedestrians often have to wait as many as three traffic signal cycles before the walk signal appears. Based on the long wait time, the assumption is that the button doesn't work and so most people don't wait and cross the street against the light.

The walk signal also lasts for an inadequate length of time. This is a very wide street crossing, especially across State Street, but the walk signal lasts for less than 20 seconds, which is barely enough time to cross the street if you are lucky enough to begin crossing exactly when the walk signal begins. If you're elderly, disabled or begin crossing a few seconds later, you will be caught in the middle of the street against the light.

The delay needs to be reduced between when the crosswalk button is pushed and when the walk signal appears. The length of time the walk signal is active needs to be increased by at least 10 seconds, or a median added for pedestrians to safely cross the street.

Walking across the street shouldn't be a dangerous, stressful experience, especially in such an important and increasingly frequented corridor of the city.
