Without prompting, DPW fixed this little pothole that had been the bane of our driveway approach for several months. So thank you.

BUT, I’m wondering why South Union wasn’t included in last year’s paving program, along with South Winooski and South Willard? The crack sealant is failing, and pothole patches from Howard to Main make it a bumpy ride for the increased number of cars and trucks that discovered our street as a good alternative to downtown during the rotary construction, and dangerous to bicyclists riding north, running the gauntlet of rough pavement.

Many no parking signs are up and down this block of Bayview, but today is October 16, and these signs expired on September 28.

Two related problems here. Yes, there’s a bent street sign, but that may have been prevented had we had a modicum of curbing on South Union.
I’m hopeful that (1) our street is next for renovation that includes stripping off the multiple layers of asphalt, (2) either unearthing the ancient slate curbing or replacing it with modern curbing, and (3) somehow slowing the 50mph+ speeders down the nearly 1/4 mile stretch between stop signs (maybe an LED speed indicator?)—we do, after all, have all sorts of warnings on Shelburne Street for Rice HS, which is a 1/2 mile walk away along back streets, and yet nothing like this exists for our Edmunds kids in their 1/4 mile walk along South Union. “Jumping the curb” is made much easier when there’s no curb!

This tour bus could not make a U-turn around this island. After many attempts, tying up traffic for some time, the driver gave up, backed up and drove forward to ECHO. Not sure how he got out of his dilemma. Should there be signage directing tour buses as to what to do? Or perhaps, like Smuggler’s Notch, warning large vehicles that the road and island are too small to navigate properly?

About twenty feet of sometimes four layers of asphalt missing, causing a hazard for bicyclists.
  • College St & Lake St Burlington, VT, 05401, USA - Burlington Electric
The paint of all four crosswalks at this very busy Lake and College Streets are worn off, causing confusion at this four-way stop. No stop lines are visible either.

Only some of the potholes inside and outside the CSWD drop-off on Pine Street have been filled in; however, the first rainfall will turn them back into muddy pools of indeterminate depth. No asphalt was used. These must be repaired to City standards if folks are expected to treat dropping off recycling and food waste as a pleasurable experience.

7 Cliff St Burlington, VT, 05401, USA - Burlington Electric
I reported this No Parking sign that was not removed or re-installed by the sidewalk crew two weeks ago. It’s still there, killing grass and posing a trip hazard.

A No Parking sign was left behind after sidewalk construction.

Unfortunately each time the street sweeper has come by over the last several months, parked cars have interfered. Mud, accumulated from two construction projects down the street, has increased since winter. A similar situation exists a few houses south past Cliff. Can parking on this two-block stretch be banned for a day to allow a thorough sweeping?
  • Cliff St & S Union St Burlington, VT, 05401, USA - Burlington Electric
After sidewalk work, street was not swept in a timely fashion, and huge muddy puddles formed on South Union because the pads covering the two drainage grates were not removed, probably because street sweeping hadn’t occurred. Residents have since took it on themselves to remove the coverings to avoid a repeat of the flooding; however, much of the silt has gone into our sewer system, negating the original purpose of the pads covering the grates.

Painted graffiti on sidewalk. Appeared the week of UVM finals. Same paint, but with fewer strokes, at two other Cliff Street locations nearer to Prospect, appeared over the same time period.

Both sides of northbound South Union at Howard have deepening potholes, perfectly in line with tires.

The instructions on who to notify in the case of a dead skunk is not clear. Skunks are "wildlife," but contacting the State Police number given (802-878-7111), which you have to talk to a live person only to find out that Game Wardens do NOT respond to such things.
So the Dead Skunk is still in the gutter at 239 South Union as of last night, the 24th.

Dead skunk in gutter at 239 So Union. No stink.

A half block of silt in the gutter left over from last week's DPW underground water pipe repair around the corner on Cliff.
  • 246 S Union St Burlington, VT, 05401, USA - Burlington Electric
Beginning with a sunken manhole at about 250 South Union, small, treacherous (to bicyclists) series of potholes extend to the Maple Street intersection. There is evidence of street repair intentions, as many have been encircled with red paint. Old, not recent, red paint.
South Union is two-way at this point, and bicyclists have no choice but to stay well in lane unless forced over into this hazardous gaunlet of potholes.
  • King St & S Union St Burlington, VT, 05401, USA - Burlington Electric
Very deep manhole subsidence creates a hazard for bicyclists.
  • 2-98 Beech St Burlington, VT, 05401, USA - Burlington Electric
Large, deep pothole in line with wheels for anyone turning onto Beech from Willard. Especially difficult to avoid if a vehicle is parked (legally) nearest the Stop sign on the south side of the street.
  • Why salt? Archived

Why plow and lay down salt when we only had a dusting of snow, and there’s no snow in the forecast until Monday? Primarily on perfectly level grades? Unnecessary salt is bad for concrete, plants, dog’s feet, our floors and the Lake.
