4205 Fitzhugh Avenue Richmond, Virginia - Sauer's Gardens
The 4200 block of Fitzhugh Ave has a drainage problem with rain water at the street curb for the last several years. A large tree on the city’s property near the street in front of 4205 Fitzhugh has uprooted part of the street and curbing causing a dam of rain water. The dam pushes back a great deal of water which stands stagnant for weeks. The stench from the standing water is awful and waiting to be a mosquito breeding ground. I have reported the problem before but nothing has been done to resolve the problem. I have communicated with Howard Glenn back in 2016 which resulted getting other city departments of DPW and Urban Forestry and DPU involved. However, the action I have seen is city crew coming on site to review the problem. I think the problem is that the large tree causing the problem is healthy therefore cannot be removed even though the tree roots are uprooting the street curbing. I see the solution is to remove the section of concrete of the curb and street causing the damming be removed and replaced with asphalt. With a smooth pathway for the rain water with asphalt, there will be no damming. I would think the city would be concern since this portion of our street is very near Thomas Jefferson High School with a number of students walking through on school days. I would think this would take priority to prevent students being infected by Zika viurs.
