Mayor Bruce A. Harris

    Vince,
I am including the mayor and council in this email since there has not been requested work done in one month since my last email.

It has been a month and we have not seen any action on our lawn. My observations from watching Passaic Ave work continue is that those residents received new top soil before the area's were seeded. This was not the procedure done for myself and the residents of Princeton. This is a complete nightmare of an experience from beginning to end. I am saying end because the curb work has been complete for months and although you have acknowledged the work was executed poorly, we have not seen Dept of Public Works or a professional landscaping company complete was was promised to us. Beginning, because all of this got off to a terrible start because we were not informed that curbs were being put in up to 3 feet into our yard.
Upon our meeting I expressed my concerns about having work done on the property and myself as a homeowner having to clean it up. To refresh your memory, the gas company left a huge mess on our lawn last year when they moved the meters to the outside of our home. Anyplace they worked the lawn is not the same and this is after I invested my time, energy and money to try and restore it to how it looked before they came on our property. Years ago the gas, water company or public works parked pipers on our yard while they did replacement of some kind. Same thing, the lawn was left in terrible shape and after my time, energy and money the lawn looks half as good as it did before.
Your commitment to me was that you would personally make sure that the lawn was restored. You expressed concern about the level of work that the company the town contracts to do the curb work would do and if it was not right, your department would fix it.
You told me I could check on work done on other streets in town and see how good it looks. All that being said, I am sitting with this huge problem that is not being addressed.
Do I need to hire my own contractor to perform the work that the town did not perform as per our conversation? What would you authorize as per expense and how would the Borough of Chatham like to pay them cash or check?
Vince, we had a conversation about all of this and I thought my points were clear. You told me what I wanted to hear, that any issues would be addressed. Time for the action, not the words.
We do not need to meet to discuss, you are free to walk the length of our lot on the Princeton side and see for yourself, the weeds, the dirt, the rocks. It is now October and the grass growing season is coming to an end and I have this vision of next spring and I am wrestling with a mess because this was not addressed. I am sure your department is busy but this should have been planned into the completion of our portion of the project and it was obviously not.
Last thought, it was you who said how the new installed curbs help to add "curb appeal" to the appearance of our house. If my house was on the market, any real estate agent would tell me to fix my yard before they would list it, so I lost 3 feet of yard and gained asphalt, weeds, rocks. Thank you Chatham for my new curb appeal.

    Dear Vince,

We've discovered that the outflow pipe (or tiles therein) from the storm drain / manhole shown in attached photo ..6288 has become offset over time, resulting in clogging with dirt and roots. We recently had it cleared, but we're concerned that blockage will recur. It drains to the stream that runs N-S in this area, just a few feet away. (See drawing attached ..6289, manhole labeled "D" and stream.) We identified that blockage as the likely cause of significant back-up flooding into the rear (northerly) lower level of the church this summer. All lines leading to that point (connecting via manholes shown in photo 6286) are clear. A.E. Hall Plumbing did the assessment and clearance work for us.

Whose responsibility would it be to repair the outflow conduit from the manhole to the stream?

Please advise if you need any further information.

    Thanks,

    Tom Belding

At about 3pm yesterday, a large branch fell onto the street on Weston Ave in front of my house (171).

I was outside with my 3 1/2 year old son; fortunately we were on our yard and unharmed. This is a town tree which I believe has been trimmed in years past. It may be time for the town to consider removing the tree as branches fall quite frequently and had this one fallen on an adult or child, serious damage could have ensued.

Please let me know if this tree can be further examined ASAP.

    Thank you,

The guy who called about his cable yesterday, Doug Trump, left me a message to say that, after much effort, he got Optimum to come out and fix his line. So that's all set.

The curious thing is that he said that a guy in an unmarked (i.e. not cable or another utility) truck was working up the pole (Doug is at 15 Inwood) on Friday, 3/22 at about 12:30 or so. The power went out for about 5 minutes - while the guy was working - and then when it came on something about the outage had messed up his Optimum connection. Could you ask the police to investigate with the various utilities and see if they had someone working there at that time?

    Thanks

    Good morning.
I would like to bring to your attention a new and dangerous situation that has developed in front of our house as well as several of our neighbors homes.
There seems to be a drainage pipe coming from the new construction at #51 causing excessive flooding and dangerous icing in front of our home and driveway apron. This situation makes it impossible to park in front of our house and/or allow us to come into our driveway from the street.
Also with my husband having Muscular Dystrophy it only magnifies the danger of it.
Please see what can be done to stop this. It has never happened in front of our house before nor will it be tolerated.
    Thank you.

Subject: Street light at corner of Red Road and Fairmont

Hi, I am writing as a concerned citizen. Many people walk up Fairmont from the train on the east side of Fairmont and cross Red Road. It is very, very dark at that intersection. Is it possible to get a street light installed?
    Thank you,

    As reported to me today:

    Good Morning,

A number of years ago the Borough planted two trees on my front lawn which I have had trimmed and shaped and taken care of over the years. Last night a truck with an arm and bucket came around 2 am. I heard the truck and thought they must be repairing a power line so went back to sleep. When I woke up the front half of the trees had been shorn off and branches and leaves were strewn all over my lawn. I called the police department who confirmed that it was not DPW. I eventually got in touch with JCP&L who confirmed they had cut the trees.

I understand the need to keep tree limbs off of power lines, however, these trees have been completely disfigured by the excessive, careless, middle-of-the-night cutting.

I am reaching out to you to find out if there is anything that can be done by the Borough to ask JCP&L to cut trees in a reasonable way and to come when the homeowner has an opportunity to know what they are doing instead of in the middle of night.

Also, if the Commission has any ideas about how I can reshape the trees so that they will grow properly I would welcome any advice.

I would appreciate any feedback from you.
    Thank you,
