No Car Princeton

The meter does not include the zone number only the meter number. Makes it impossible to pay on the app.

THIS IS NOT A DUPLICATE. I want to ensure that Princeton’s data reflects what was clearly a vehicle collision of some sort at Paul Robeson and Bayard. The broken pieces of car in the picture have been on the island for weeks. This also speaks to the need to make both signal and design improvements to make this intersection safer.
  • Washington Rd Princeton 08540, United States - Princeton
THIS IS NOT A DUPLICATE. Box truck parked in a no stopping/standing zone and parked on the sidewalk, on Washington Rd. This is a danger for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. WB Mason should be able to find and pay for parking, just like any other driver. I see them here repeatedly at this time, so it should be possible for Princeton Police to plan enforcement.

Very unsafe encounter this morning using the pedestrian crosswalk at the Paul Robeson, Bayard, and Hodge intersection. I had the right of way and was crossing Paul Robeson north to south.

A person driving an SUV failed to yield while making a left hand turn, from Bayard onto Robeson (coming from the north). Due to the speed of the oncoming traffic from the south, we accelerated at high speed (while in conversation with a passenger in the vehicle). Upon seeing me in the crosswalk, she slammed on the brakes. Seeing the oncoming traffic she grew panicked. Luckily there was enough space for her to pass in front of me.

This is Princeton’s most dangerous intersection for a reason (measured by vehicle crashes). The municipality cannot wait until the full Hamilton-Wiggins-Robeson project to fix this intersection. It is dangerous now and requires immediate attention. There may he lost cost measures that can quickly installed to slow turning vehicle speeds, including sidewalk extensions for the pedestrian refuge and a basic hardened center-line turning treatment. Furthermore, this intersection should have 10 to 15 second dedicated pedestrian signal. Pedestrian fatalities were up 8% in NJ from 2018 to 2017, and are up 35% nationwide since 2009.

80,000 pound private sanitation truck illegal parked the wrong direction on Vandeventer Ave. I routinely see this company do this in this location. Creates a dangerous situation where cars and cyclists need to swerve into the middle of the street. These trucks also have notorious blind spots and this is right by a crosswalk.

The beg button on the SW side of the intersection of Alexander and the pathway to Forbes College (on the Forbes College side of Alexander) is broken. For a few weeks, I have had to press it repeatedly and hard to get it to change. You don’t have to do that on the others, which is how I know this one is broken. Today it didn’t work at all.

As I was crossing the crosswalk across Nassau, at University Pl., a person driving a minivan accelerated into a right turn into Nassau. There was not a crash, but the driver was texting and there could have been. I had the right of way as I was in the crosswalk and had the walk sign.

Drivers often proceed with a right turn here when they don’t have the right of way, bullying pedestrians to give way. This should be a signalized right, with the pedestrian crosswalk being on a separate cycle. This is one of Princeton’s most heavily used pedestrian crosswalks intersecting with a heavily used state road. Pedestrian fatalities in the United States are up 35% since 2009. This intersection should be proactively addressed to keep residents safe.

THIS IS NOT A DUPLICATE. The slip lane at Paul Robeson and Chambers needs to be closed. Cars fly through there making a right, which is dangerous. It also is part of the reasons cars do not slow to the 15 MPH posted speed limit.

Take this publicly owned space, extend the island and the beautiful plantings in it, and extend the sidewalk around and down Paul Robeson. There is room and a need for a sidewalk on the other side of Paul Robeson. It will also be a road diet and constrict the space for cars and slow them down. No need to use expensive police time on traffic enforcement. Just design the road for the 15 MPH speed limit.

This side of Paul Robeson needs to be narrowed — at the very least with a striped white line — because there is zero way cars actually slow to 15 MPH as they approach the intersection with Chambers. Ideally the Township should add a sidewalk. I’ve seen folks walking along the street here or on the tree roots, they really deserve a proper sidewalk. Would be the best way to get cars to drive the speed limit too.

This comment is for the entire asphalt walkway along the western side of Alexander St (along the golf course). If Princeton wants to increase cycling, widening the Alexander St path is low-hang fruit. Currently cyclists and peds cannot pass each other comfortably. There is space to add 2+ feet of width. This work could be added to the scope of work for the next repaving contract for the street. (Would also be reasonable to press the University to do this as a PILOT).

Only the most confident cyclists ride on Alexander St itself, because the sharrows and painted lanes provide no protection. The town should embrace that most will ride on this path and accommodate them. A wobblier rider is turned off by having to slow down uphill when approaching a ped.

Washington Rd., as it runs through Princeton’s campus, needs to be (at least) striped and ideally have a painted bike lane. There is sufficient space between where cars drive and the curb (as seen in the provided video still) and there is empirical evidence that most drivers will stay within the painted lines. Narrowing this space on the street would slow cars, greatly enhancing pedestrian safety in an area with highly used pedestrian crosswalks.

Doing this would also create a safe space for cyclists. As is seen in the video still, many cyclists ride on the sidewalk here, despite the presence of sharrows. Providing a painted lane would get more cyclists off the sidewalk, as it would create a space more respected by cars.

Ideally, Washington Rd would have a hardened bike lane in this available space. It would slow cars, thus protecting pedestrians, and greatly benefit cyclists. I would recommend a raised cycle track be considered (see this from NACTO: https://nacto.org/publication/urban-bikeway-design-guide/cycle-tracks/raised-cycle-tracks)

Across the street from 332 Alexander St, nearer the southern entrance to the parking lot, is a pot hole on the Alexander St bike/walk path. This presents a danger to cyclists who may not see the pot hole until the last minute, who may then swerve or slam of the breaks. Resulting conflict with people riding a bike could cause conflict with pedestrians. It is also a trip hazard for pedestrians.

Note: a previous request for this pothole was “Archived” because it was identified as a duplicate of another service request. It was not a duplicate, so I am resubmitting it.

    Thanks!

This pot hole is across from the Dinky station, it is different than the two other pot holes I have reported on the bike/walk path on Alexander St. It is between electrical pole and fire hydrant, across from the secondary entrance to the station (the one near Skillman Furniture).

It presents a danger to cyclists who may not see it until the last moment (and May swerve into pedestrians) and to pedestrians, who may trip.

Across the street from the provided address, on the Alexander St bike/walk path, is a crumbling sidewalk and pothole. This presents a danger for cyclists, who need to reduce speed at the last minute and potentially creates a dangerous conflict with pedestrians if a cyclist tries to swerve to avoid the hole. It is also a pedestrian trip hazard.
